Fairfax County will join a regionwide celebration of bicycling as an option for commuters this Friday (May 15).
More than two dozen pit stops are planned across the county for Bike to Work Day 2026, offering free T-shirts, snacks and other giveaways to cyclists who pass by on the way to their office or workplace.
“Those who telework are also encouraged to participate by biking to a pit stop and then back home to work for the day,” the Fairfax County Department of Transportation said on its event page. “And for longer commutes, many pit stops are located near transit hubs or park-and-ride lots, making biking a great first- and last-mile option for commuting.”
Bike to Work Day was conceived in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists as a way to encourage commuters to travel via bicycle instead of driving alone in their car. Typically held every May, the annual event took off in the D.C. region in 2001 and now draws tens of thousands of participants, according to organizers.
The regional Bike to Work Day is organized by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) and its Commuter Connections program with the nonprofit Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA).
Registration is still open for interested participants. It’s not required to visit a pit stop, but signing up will ensure a free Bike to Work Day T-shirt — colored purple this year — is available.
