DEVELOPING: More than 25,000 without power in Fairfax County after storms

More than 25,000 homes and businesses are without power in Fairfax County after severe storms ripped through the region.

The storms arrived amid the evening commute and came in two waves, prompting multiple Severe Thunderstorm Warnings from the National Weather Service. As of publication time the second wave is starting to exit the county to the east.

Dominion is reporting just over 27,000 Fairfax County customers in the dark as of 6:30 p.m. McLean, Dunn Loring and Burke are among the communities with the highest concentration of outages, according to the power company’s map.

The Burke area was hit particularly hard, with numerous reports of trees and wires down, plus some reports of roof damage. Forecasters said the extensive damage is likely the result of high straight-line winds, not a tornado, though the damage was tornado-like in scope.

Initial word from Dominion’s website suggests power may be back on for most people by midnight, though that is subject to change, with widespread outages affecting a total of nearly 50,000 customers across Northern Virginia.

Both Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport are in a ground stop due to the storms, with flight delays building, according to the FAA.

Despite the outages and flight delays, the storms should at least help in one regard: by bringing significant rainfall to the area, which is currently experiencing a significant drought.
