With the weather warming up, Fairfax County families are dusting off the strollers and heading outside — and the county’s playgrounds are ready for them, from fully accessible destination parks to shaded neighborhood favorites tucked into the woods.

Countywide

Just when the snow and ice from the last winter storm has mostly cleared, another is making its way toward the D.C. region.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the area, including Fairfax County, starting at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday). The alert is currently scheduled to remain in effect until 10 a.m. Monday (Feb. 23).


Countywide

After a couple days where temperatures ticked above freezing, the D.C. region will see a return of the frigid weather responsible for the “snowcrete” still piled up on many sidewalks and roadways.

The National Weather Service has issued Extreme Cold and High Wind warnings for the region, including Fairfax County, that are scheduled to take effect at 4 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday).

Sports

The running game was significant on both sides of the ball for the Marshall Statesmen in Thursday (Oct. 10) football action.

On defense, the Statesmen allowed 303 yards rushing to the host and undefeated Washington-Liberty Generals, while gaining a modest 125 in their 42-13 loss in a Liberty District high-school game.


Sports

Sasha Minsky and Charlie Ortmans are teammates again — this time in college.

The graduates of the Potomac School in McLean, where they were standout high-school cross country and track and field runners, are underclassmen on this fall’s men’s cross country team at Harvard. Ortmans is a sophomore, Minsky a freshman.


News

Three Northern Virginia students were honored for academic prowess recently by the McLean area branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW).

The meeting, held at the McLean Community Center, also featured a program on “Gender, Women and Politics: Where Are We Now.”
