A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Fairfax County and the rest of the D.C. area.
Expected to remain in place until 10 p.m. today (Tuesday), the watch says that scattered but severe thunderstorms are possible throughout the region.
“Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, although large hail and a tornado are possible,” the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather outlook issued just before 3 p.m. “A few instances of flash flooding are also possible.”
As of 3:45 p.m., the NWS is forecasting an 80% chance of precipitation for Fairfax County, with showers potentially continuing into tomorrow (Wednesday).
The Virginia Department of Transportation is advising travelers to monitor weather conditions, noting that downed trees and other hazards in roadways can be reported online.
