It’s that time of the year again, when Virginia does a temperature check on its upcoming transportation projects.
Community members can share their thoughts on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Six-Year Improvement Plan during a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at VDOT’s Northern Virginia District Office in Fair Lakes (4975 Alliance Drive).
In addition to hearing comments on the draft plan, which determines how public funds are allocated and is revised annually, the Commonwealth Transportation Board will accept comments on new projects that could be added to the list, as long as they cost at least $25 million.
Fairfax County projects currently in the program include:
- Widening 1.5 miles of Route 29, an estimated $96 million project to relieve traffic bottlenecks between Centreville and Legato
- The planned ring road segment at Seven Corners, which is seeking nearly $137 million
- Bicycle and pedestrian improvements by the Vienna Metro station, an estimated $10.5 million project
The draft also highlights areas that will be evaluated for possible projects through VDOT’s Project Pipeline, including Little River Turnpike from Prosperity Avenue to Wakefield Chapel Road in Annandale, and Route 7 from Chain Bridge Road to I-495 in Tysons.
A VDOT dashboard shows 32 projects in Fairfax County collectively worth $1.76 billion slated for the next four years, with fiscal year 2023 starting July 1.
A written comment period will be open through May 23. Road and highway project comments can be sent to Six-YearProgram@VDOT.Virginia.gov, and comments on transit and rail projects can be emailed to DRPTPR@drpt.virginia.gov.
