An Arlington-based dessert shop has opened its long-awaited Vienna location, the third in Virginia.
Bakeshop — which specializes in cupcakes, cakes, and macarons, in addition to breakfast sandwiches — opened its doors at 421 Maple Avenue East on June 20. The bakery and cafe took over and renovated the site of Skorpios Maggio’s Greek Family Restaurant, which closed in June 2024.
“Vienna was always the next spot for a Bakeshop,” founder Justin Stegall told FFXnow. “I really love the community vibe there. It’s one of the best communities in Virginia. We’ve had our eye on it for a long time but no retail space came available that would suit us … When we heard Skorpios was closing, that was the perfect location and we jumped on it.”
Stegall said that while the buildout took some time, he “could not be more happy with it.”
“It’s bigger than the other two shops, which gives us a little more room to do some seating and also give our kitchen enough space so that they can really work comfortably,” he said.

Bakeshop launched in Arlington’s Clarendon neighborhood in 2010 at the peak of gourmet cupcakes’ popularity, then expanded into Falls Church in 2019. A Georgetown location opened in 2021, but has since closed.
“Each shop has its own personality, and I like to open them and let them find their own way and let customers drive what they want and then we will deliver that,” Stegall said. “My initial [take is] that breakfast will be very big in Vienna so we are definitely focusing on our breakfast items and our breakfast sandwiches. They have been extremely popular so far.”
Stegall said that there are still a few loose ends to tie up post-launch. He’s hoping to add a few lunch sandwiches, which will be served on fresh baked bread, biscuits, or croissants, to the menu. The Vienna location is also operating on abbreviated hours of 8 a.m.-3 p.m. until staffing is complete; after that, the shop will likely stay open until 8 p.m.
Bakeshop joins a growing array of sweet shops that have opened in Vienna in recent months. Last week, Shipley Donuts opened its doors at 256 Maple Avenue East — across the street from a Texas Donuts that launched in December — and earlier in June, Whistler’s Ice Cream Extraordinaire began selling scoops of French custard at the Village Green shopping center.
“The locals have been so welcoming to us and we’ve really enjoyed opening the shop,” Stegall said. “All of our employees have loved working there. We really look forward to getting to further know all our customers in Vienna.”
