After making a successful debut in Fairfax City last year, Layered has set its sights on the D.C. region’s biggest shopping mall for a follow-up.
The cafe, known for its photogenic desserts and drinks, anticipates opening a second location in Tysons Corner Center this November, with the goal of welcoming patrons before the winter holidays.
Though the expansion wasn’t publicly announced until late July, a spokesperson for Layered says it has been in the works since the original outpost opened in Fairfax City’s Courthouse Plaza shopping center in August 2025.
“We’ve been in discussions with Macerich since our grand opening,” the spokesperson told FFXnow, referring to the real estate investment company that owns and manages Tysons Corner Center. “Our management team spent the first year focusing on developing and training our staff to ensure this second location delivers the same exceptional service, high-quality products, and elevated experience customers expect from our original location.”
Developed by the same team behind the bakery Chateau de Chantilly, Layered serves a variety of French-style cakes and pastries, coffee and tea, often infused with Asian flavors like matcha and yuzu. Its creations hand-crafted to resemble fruit have proven ripe for admiration both in person and on social media.
The initial weeks after its soft launch at 3924 Blenheim Blvd on Aug. 7, 2025 were characterized by long lines and regular depletions of its limited stock, which was replenished three times a day.
“This past year has been incredible,” the Layered spokesperson said by email when asked how business in Fairfax City has gone. “We’ve received tremendous support from across the community and beyond. Through our marketing platform, we were able to see that we’ve officially welcomed visitors from all 50 states (which is a crazy statistic given we’ve only been open one year)!”

According to the spokesperson, Layered’s team, led by owners Jaeyoung Choi and Jae Lee, has always envisioned expanding, and Tysons Corner Center emerged as an early target.
“Tysons Corner is one of the DMV’s most prominent destinations,” they said. “This location will significantly increase our brand’s visibility and serve as an important stepping stone toward our long-term growth plans.”
Located at 1961 Chain Bridge Road Mall F1CL, Layered will occupy a 1,540-square-foot space on Tysons Corner Center’s first floor across from the clothing brand Zara’s recently reopened and expanded store.
The suite was previously filled by the Turkish restaurant Istanbul Kitchen, which can still be found in Falls Church and as a pop-up at local food festivals. The eatery will participate in the Mosaic Fall Fest, coming to the Mosaic District in Merrifield this weekend (Sept. 26-27).
Though it’s smaller than the 3,600-square-foot cafe in Fairfax City, Layered says the Tysons location will still function as “a full storefront” with many of the same menu items — plus some brand-new additions.
“While the Tysons Corner store will offer many of the specialty coffees, pastries, and desserts our guests love at our Fairfax City location, we’re also creating exclusive desserts specifically for the Tysons Corner launch!” the spokesperson said.
More retail additions coming to Tysons Corner Center

Layered will arrive at a busy time for Tysons Corner Center, which has turned over 43 different retail spaces over the past year and has 13 construction projects currently underway, the Washington Business Journal recently reported.
Sloomoo Institute celebrated its grand opening at the mall this past Saturday (Sept. 19), and according to Tysons Corner Center’s website, the Vietnamese eatery Clay Bowl has finally opened in the third-floor food court.
Among the tenants still in the works are:
- Eataly: The New York-based Italian chain is expected to open a food hall and marketplace in the mall’s former American Girl space next year
- Dick’s House of Sport: The interactive sports venue is under construction in the long-vacant Lord & Taylor space, aiming for a fall 2027 opening
- Milk & Honey: “Coming soon” signage has emerged for the Southern-inspired restaurant from Thompson Hospitality, which anticipates a November 2026 opening in the former Dhoom and Naan & Beyond space on the mall’s second floor.
- Great Big Game Show: The mall will welcome another entertainment offering from the same team behind The Escape Game, which opened in February. Located in the east end on the second floor near Coastal Flats and Level 99, the interactive game show venue is expected to open in November, a spokesperson told FFXnow.
- Neuhaus Chocolates: The Belgian chocolatier has said its shop near Nordstrom is on track to open in late November.
- Tiny’s Corner Play Cafe: The supervised play area and cafe is expected to open in the former Lord & Taylor wing this fall.
- Figs: The medical scrubs retail chain will open a store on the mall’s second floor near Nordstrom.
- On: Signage for the Swiss shoes and apparel outlet has appeared at the second-floor space near Wasabi where Harry & David closed its holiday pop-up earlier this year.
- FP Movement: The activewear brand is coming to a space on the mall’s second floor, adjacent to the relocated Under Armour.
- LoopyLand: Details on what appears to be a gaming venue remain sparse, but Fairfax County staff are currently reviewing a building plan for a 7,641-square-foot storefront near the future House of Sport.
