Substitute teacher charged with assaulting student at Reston school

A Fairfax County Public Schools substitute teacher has been arrested and dismissed from her job for allegedly assaulting a student at Dogwood Elementary School (12300 Glade Drive).

The county’s Child Protective Services received a referral on Sept. 25, 2024 indicating that a substitute teacher had assaulted a student at the Reston school, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release on Saturday (Feb. 1).

Two of the three soldiers on the Army helicopter that collided with an American Airlines passenger jet over the Potomac River on Wednesday (Jan. 29) have been identified.

One of the bodies that has been recovered so far appears to be that of Staff Sgt. Ryan Austin O’Hara, a 28-year-old Lilburn, Georgia, native who had served in the Army as a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot since 2017, the Department of the Army announced today (Friday).

One of the pedestrians struck in a hit-and-run crash on Richmond Highway earlier this week has died, police say.

Erica Tibbs, 33, of Alexandria and her 5-year-old child were crossing Richmond Highway (Route 1) near the Buckman Road intersection in Hybla Valley around 8:34 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 29) when an SUV driver hit them, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The victims of last night’s deadly airplane and helicopter crash outside Reagan National Airport included multiple Fairfax County Public Schools students and their parents, Superintendent Michelle Reid says.

All 64 people on American Airlines Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, and three soldiers on the military helicopter — a U.S. Army UH-60 Blackhawk that was on a training mission from Fort Belvoir — are believed to have perished in the crash.

MS-13 gang member gets life in prison for Reston murders

A man who was convicted last year for his role in a series of murders in Reston will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Elmer De Jesus Alas Candray, 27, was sentenced by a federal judge today (Thursday) to six concurrent life prison sentences for multiple racketeering, murder and gun charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

The Town of Herndon is taking on a new identity that it hopes will distinguish it from the rest of Northern Virginia.

The town’s years-long rebranding push reached a milestone on Tuesday (Jan. 28) when the Herndon Town Council voted unanimously to adopt “Live Differently” as the concept and tagline that will guide future marketing efforts.

The D.C. region is reeling in the aftermath of a crash involving an American Airlines passenger jet and a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport that officials say left no survivors.

Arriving from Witchita, Kansas, the airplane was making its descent when it collided with the helicopter over the Potomac River around 8:50 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday). The crash drew a massive emergency response that included personnel from Fairfax County’s police and fire departments.

A woman and a child were critically injured in a crash this evening (Wednesday) on Richmond Highway in Mount Vernon, police say.

According to scanner traffic, officers and emergency medical responders were dispatched to Richmond Highway (Route 1) at Mount Vernon Highway around 8:35 p.m. for the crash, which was described by police as a hit-and-run.

UPDATED: Teen charged in shooting near Worldgate Shopping Center in Herndon

Police are investigating a shooting in the area near the Worldgate Shopping Center in Herndon.

Officers with the Town of Herndon and Fairfax County police departments were dispatched to the 2100 block of Centreville Road around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 29), though there was some confusion about where exactly the reported shooting occurred.

Reston Hospital expands cancer services, possible surgical center in the works

The future will bring new services and, potentially, a brand-new facility to Reston Hospital Center.

The hospital opened a new, 8-room unit for patients receiving cancer treatment on Dec. 20, 2024, completing the first phase of an expansion of its oncology program, HCA Virginia Health System announced last Thursday (Jan. 23).
