A fast-food chain that originated in California and specializes in Nashville-style hot chicken has landed in West Springfield.

Crimson Coward announced on Friday (Jan. 3) that its new restaurant in the Old Keene Mill Shopping Center (8424 Old Keene Mill Road) is now open. Operating daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the 1,449-square-foot eatery is located in between Zips Cleaners and the forthcoming juice shop South Block.

Virginia State Police spent hours scouring a storm drain in the Rose Hill area for a driver who allegedly fled the scene of a crash on I-495 this afternoon (Monday).

Troopers were responding to eastbound I-495 near Eisenhower Avenue around 2:35 p.m. for two vehicle crashes when a third crash occurred, according to state police.

Fairfax County students will get a second extra day of winter break.

After a midday lull, snow is starting to fall again across the D.C. area, prompting Fairfax County Public Schools to cancel classes and all activities on its grounds for tomorrow (Tuesday). School-aged child care centers are included in the closures, and all workers not designated as “essential” have been granted administrative leave again.


Countywide

The snowstorm that began overnight has effectively shut down Fairfax County.

After closing most local government offices and facilities, the county announced this morning (Monday) that Fairfax Connector has suspended all bus service, as of 7:46 a.m., and no trash and recycling collection services will be provided today.

Fairfax County police are investigating whether a driver might have been speeding when he fatally crashed on Franconia-Springfield Parkway last Friday (Jan. 3).

Officers responded to the parkway near Bonniemill Lane in Springfield at 8:06 p.m. for a single-vehicle crash involving a 2016 Ford van, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Fairfax County Public Schools has called off classes for tomorrow (Monday), giving students an extra day of winter break as the D.C. region braces for what could be its biggest snowstorm in years.

Joining Arlington and other local school districts, FCPS will close its school buildings and offices tomorrow. All activities on school grounds have been canceled, including extracurricular activities, athletic practices and adult education classes, and School Age Child Care centers will also be closed.

Today’s promised warning shot of snow has begun to fall in Fairfax County.

The National Weather Service has issued at “Snow Squall Warning” for parts of the county after one was spotted at 3:27 p.m. in the Annandale and Lincolnia area, moving east at 45 mph.


Around Town

The McLean Community Center (MCC) is now old enough to qualify for its own “Seniors in Action” program.

The community center will start celebrating 50 years of providing events, cultural enrichment, classes and other services with a special event tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. in the Alden Theatre (1234 Ingleside Avenue), kicking off a full year of festivities.

A resident was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries from a house fire in the West Falls Church area early this morning (Friday).

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units were dispatched to the 2900 block of Lawrence Drive around 1:42 a.m. Upon arriving at the small, single-family home, firefighters reported that “heavy” fire was visible, and they were told someone was still inside, according to scanner traffic.

Though a flurry of flakes rushed through the area in late November, this weekend could bring D.C. area’s first serious snowfall of the season.

The National Weather Service is currently predicting a 70% chance of precipitation today (Friday), with rain likely turning into snow mixed with rain after 3 p.m. Less than half an inch of snow is expected.
