Herndon proposes Center Street rebuild, community center study in new capital project plan

The Town of Herndon is considering adding more than a dozen infrastructure and facility projects to its capital improvement plan (CIP).

Presented to the Herndon Planning Commission at a work session on Jan. 13, the proposed fiscal years 2026-2031 CIP features a total of 40 projects — 16 of them new — that would cost an estimated $268.6 million over the next five years, including more than $32.3 million for the upcoming fiscal year that will start on July 1.

Driver dies after single-vehicle crash in Herndon

A driver died last night (Monday) after crashing on Sterling Road in Herndon.

Police officers were dispatched to westbound Sterling Road at Rock Hill Road at 7:35 p.m. for the single-vehicle crash, according to the Town of Herndon Police Department.

Update — At its Wednesday, Jan. 22 meeting, the Virginia Senate General Laws and Technology Committee voted 11-3 with Sen. Adam Ebbin, the committee’s chair, abstaining to advance the bill to authorize a casino in Fairfax County to the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee.

Earlier: A bill that would make Fairfax County eligible for a casino is again making headway through the Virginia Senate.

Another round of snow is expected to hit the D.C. area today (Sunday).

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region, forecasting between 1 and 3 inches of snow for Fairfax County and other parts of Northern Virginia.

Vienna man pleads guilty to leaking secrets about Israeli plan to attack Iran

A former CIA analyst has pleaded guilty to leaking top-secret national security information, the Justice Department announced today (Friday).

Asif Rahman, a 34-year-old resident of Vienna, used his security clearance to obtain classified documents that he then copied and shared with people who weren’t authorized to see them, according to the DOJ.

New cognitive health practice to launch first in-person office in Tysons

A local medical practice that specializes in care for dementia and other cognitive conditions is making the leap from online to in-person services.

After launching in mid-2024 with virtual care options for patients in the D.C. area, Sunday Health will open its first brick-and-mortar office next Tuesday (Jan. 21) in the Tysons Professional Center at 8320 Old Courthouse Road, Suite 401.

Reston math teacher honored with top U.S. award for STEM education

A math teacher at South Lakes High School has been recognized by the White House as one of the best science and math educators in the country.

Emily Burrell, who has taught at the Reston school for a decade, is among 336 teachers and mentors to receive this year’s Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), which are considered the U.S. government’s highest honor for K-12 math, science, engineering and technology teachers.

McLean residents looking to get their photos from the recent winter holidays framed might want to head to the Chesterbrook Shopping Center tomorrow (Saturday).

Starting at 10 a.m., Framebridge will open the doors of its newest custom framing store, located in the shopping center at 6234 Old Dominion Drive. To celebrate its grand opening, the business will give out archival prints of Great Falls Park that customers can get framed.

Dulles Airport traveler convicted of carrying cocaine-infused desserts

A Maryland man has been convicted of cocaine possession after the drug was found in a cake he transported from Colombia to Dulles International Airport last spring.

Gildo Ricci, a 69-year-old Peruvian citizen who legally resides in Rockville, had 2.07 kilograms of cocaine concealed in food that customs agents discovered in his luggage on April 25, 2024, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

A gift from The Madeira School’s past will enable it to plan for the future, the head of the private, all-girls’ school in McLean says.

The Madeira School, a college preparatory and boarding school that serves students in grades 9 through 12, announced this week that an anonymous former graduate has donated $60 million — a record amount not only for this 118-year-old school, but for any independent girls’ school in the U.S.
