Fairfax Connector fares to increase for first time in seven years

The price of taking Fairfax Connector is officially going up.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the bus system’s first fare increase in seven years without discussion at a meeting today (Tuesday). Starting on July 29, fares will jump about 12% from $2 to $2.25 for the base rate and from $4.25 to $4.80 for express fares.

NEW: Herndon mayor won’t seek reelection, candidates finalized

The ballot is set for the Town of Herndon’s upcoming mayoral and town council elections.

Current council members Keven LeBlanc and Pradip Dhakal will face off on Nov. 5 to succeed Mayor Sheila Olem, who won’t seek reelection after two terms as mayor and more than a decade on the town council.

Applicants wanted for Fairfax City and Vienna culinary jobs training program

Reinforcements are on the way to bolster Fairfax City and the Town of Vienna’s restaurant industry.

The two localities are seeking applicants for a new Culinary Careers Collaborative program intended to train future chefs, bartenders and other food service workers for potential jobs with local businesses.

Report: European-style grocer coming to Reston and Falls Church

A national grocery chain originally inspired by open food markets in Europe is plotting an expansion in the D.C. area.

The Fresh Market has landed deals to open stores at Reston Station and West Falls, the mixed-use development currently under construction on Falls Church City’s former high school campus, the Washington Business Journal first reported.

Inside fashion retailer Primark’s new Tysons store, opening today

Opening day has arrived for Primark’s first store in Virginia.

The Ireland-based fashion company will cut the ribbon on its new, two-story shop at Tysons Corner Center at 11 a.m. today (Tuesday), welcoming customers with free tote bags, complimentary sweets from Georgetown Cupcakes and other giveaways.

NEW: Passenger in Clifton crash dies from injuries, police say

A Manassas man has died after being seriously injured in a vehicle crash in Clifton on Saturday (July 13).

The Fairfax County Police Department responded to the intersection of Henderson Road and Old Yates Ford Road around 10 a.m. for the crash involving a 2003 Honda Accord sedan and a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas SUV, according to a press release.

Route 7, Frontier Drive projects get partial funding from regional group

Fairfax County will receive millions of dollars in state funding for major transportation improvements, but it didn’t get everything it asked for from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA).

Members of the regional organization, including Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay, adopted a new six-year program for fiscal years 2024-2029 on Thursday (July 11) that allocated $696.6 million to 23 projects designed to reduce congestion and add travel options, including five projects in Fairfax County and two in Fairfax City.

Construction begins at MetroWest on more condominiums

A new condominium complex is under construction at MetroWest.

Crews have spent the past couple of weeks digging up a vacant lot in the middle of the Oakton development. Fencing and road blocks have been erected around the nearly 7.5-acre site, closing Royal Victoria Drive to traffic from Vaden Drive as well as footpaths used by residents to get to the Vienna Metro station to the north.

‘Excessive’ heat expected in Fairfax County this week

It’s going to be another hot and humid start to the week in the D.C. area.

An Excessive Heat Warning will take effect across the region, including for Fairfax County, at 11 a.m. and continue until 8 p.m. today (Monday). Shortly before 1 p.m., the National Weather Service also upgraded an Excessive Heat Watch for the same time frame tomorrow (Tuesday) to another Excessive Heat Warning.

After barricade, Centreville man charged with soliciting sex from child

Fairfax County police arrested a Centreville man over the weekend who is suspected of soliciting sex from an 11-year-old child.

The arrest became complicated when the man allegedly refused to leave his home, and officers learned that he may be armed, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release on Saturday (July 13).
