Vienna to design mini roundabout for site of recent pedestrian crash

The Town of Vienna is moving ahead with plans for a second mini roundabout, this time at an intersection where a pedestrian was seriously injured in a crash last month.

As an initial safety measure, the town will install stop signs at all three sides of the Church Street and East Street NE intersection, which currently only requires drivers on Church Street to stop, Vienna Public Works Director Brad Baer told the town council at a meeting on May 6.

Fatal motorcycle crash in Newington under police investigation

A motorcyclist died in a crash early yesterday (Sunday) morning on Rolling Road in Newington, police say.

Officers responded at 5:18 a.m. to a crash involving a 2003 Honda 1300 motorcycle near Delong Drive, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Police initially said the motorcyclist, Cornell Parish III, a 32-year-old Woodbridge resident, died at the scene, but an update published around 9 p.m. says he was “taken to the hospital and pronounced deceased.”

Pool season returns to Reston with newly renovated facilities, extended hours

Reston Association is ready to dive into a new swimming season — one that will open all 15 pools to members for the first time in half a decade.

The 2024 pool season will kick off tomorrow (Saturday) with the heated pools at North Shore and Ridge Heights opening at 11 a.m. Eight other facilities, including the newly renovated Lake Thoreau Pool, will follow suit on May 25 for Memorial Day weekend.

Starr Hill Brewery’s expansion to the ground level of Capital One Center in Tysons is now complete.

The company announced on Tuesday (May 7) that its Starr Hill Brewpub is officially open at 7730 Capital One Tower Road, allowing it to offer additional food, drinks and live music beyond what’s available at Starr Hill Biergarten in The Perch on the roof of Capital One Hall.

(Updated at 3:40 p.m.) Police are investigating a fatal crash on the Dulles Toll Road along the Reston and Herndon border.

The crash involved two vehicles that collided around 11:20 a.m. near Fairfax County Parkway, according to a Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) spokesperson.

County to share concepts for future Wiehle Avenue later this month

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will soon unveil its proposals for transforming Wiehle Avenue in Reston into a more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly street.

The department will host a community meeting at Langston Hughes Middle School (11401 Ridge Heights Road) on Thursday, May 23, from 7-9 p.m. to share three concepts for possible future improvements to the roadway.

The Board of Supervisors gave a unanimous thumbs up on Tuesday (May 7) to property owner T&M McLean Ventures’ proposal to replace half of the office park’s 12 commercial townhouses with 104 for-sale residential units in a single, five-story building.

(Updated at 11:50 a.m. on 5/13/2024) Fairfax County police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that shut down Georgetown Pike in Great Falls for hours early Thursday morning (May 9).

First responders with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the intersection of Georgetown Pike and Falls Chase Court for a crash near the Great Falls Church of Christ at 12:21 a.m., according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.

FCPD: Sheriff’s deputy fired, arrested for assault at Fairfax County jail

(Updated at 10:05 a.m.) A now-former Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputy was arrested earlier this week for allegedly assaulting a person being booked into the county jail in January.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, Nicholas Vaszil, a 28-year-old Annandale resident, “assaulted an inmate” in the booking area of the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on around 3:45 a.m. on Jan. 1 “following a verbal altercation.”
