FCPS seeks to speed up lawsuit over federal funding freeze

Fairfax County Public Schools is asking an appeals court to accelerate proceedings in its lawsuit over the U.S. Education Department cutting it off from federal funds.

The request filed last Thursday (Oct. 2) came a day after a three-judge panel with the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously denied the school system’s bid to stop the federal government from freezing or canceling any more funds while the case is in court.

Pedestrian still in hospital after crash near Arrowbrook Centre in Herndon

A man remains hospitalized after being struck by a driver near Arrowbrook Centre in Herndon late last week.

Fairfax County police officers and medics were dispatched around 7:22 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 3) for a crash involving a driver in a 2012 Nissan Versa hitting a pedestrian near the intersection of Centreville Road and Woodland Park Road just south of the Dulles Toll Road.

County launches update of 20-year plan for Franconia-Springfield area

Fairfax County is revisiting its vision for downtown Springfield in the hopes of adapting it to a new era.

The county’s Department of Planning and Development will formally kick off its Franconia-Springfield Planning Study with a virtual community meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. Interested members of the public must register to receive a link to the Zoom meeting.

Global HR software company to trade Tysons office for Reston

A company that helps thousands of companies around the world manage their personnel and finances is planning a move westward along the Silver Line corridor.

Workday will relocate its existing office in Tysons to Reston Town Center, where it has signed a lease for all of the eighth and ninth floors at 1818 Library Street, property owner and developer BXP announced last Thursday (Oct. 2).

FCPS celebrates progress on solar panel, electric bus initiatives, even as federal support fades

Half a decade after Fairfax County launched a solar panel initiative touted as the largest in Virginia to date, the first major installation at a public school is nearing completion.

Rooftop solar panels have been under construction at Olde Creek Elementary School (9524 Old Creek Drive) since Aug. 1 and are on track to become fully operational by Oct. 13, according to Fairfax County Public Schools.

NEW: Smithsonian directed to prepare Space Shuttle Discovery for relocation

The White House is reportedly seeking to move forward with a planned relocation of the Discovery space shuttle from its longtime home in Chantilly to Texas.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has requested that the Smithsonian Institution work with NASA on preparing to transfer the orbiter from the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center to the Space Center Houston Museum in Texas, according to a letter sent to members of Congress earlier this week.

FCPS to explore adding advanced academic centers in all middle schools

Poe Middle School is getting closer to having an Advanced Academic Program (AAP) center of its own, and other middle schools could soon follow suit.

The Fairfax County School Board voted unanimously last Thursday (Sept. 25) to begin engaging with the community on a plan to open a new AAP center at Poe (7000 Cindy Lane), which would be the first middle school in the Annandale High School pyramid to offer full-time advanced academic services.

Much of the federal government has ground to a halt, as Republicans and Democrats in Congress remain at odds over a funding plan.

With no clear end to the shutdown in sight after Democrats held firm yesterday (Wednesday) on their demands for a budget that extends health insurance tax credits, local government officials shared resources to help federal workers and other people affected by a loss of services, while some area restaurants are offering deals to ease the financial blow.

Movies about space, Olympic athletes highlight upcoming Washington West Film Festival

Fairfax County’s very own film festival is returning this month with a lineup that ranges from “Shrek” to ruminations on women’s rights in Iran and European attitudes toward refugees.

Now in its 14th year, the Washington West Film Festival will kick off this Friday (Oct. 3) at Reston Town Center with a 25th-anniversary screening of “Shrek,” organized in conjunction with the town center’s inaugural Rocktoberfest. More than a dozen other movies will follow from Oct. 9-13.
