Thousands of people in Fairfax County are still without electricity after a quick but powerful storm swept through the D.C. area yesterday (Thursday).

While some major outages were addressed last night, Dominion Energy still has 163 projects affecting 10,356 customers in Fairfax County to address, as of 10:40 a.m., according to its outage map.

Upcoming Juneteenth events shine light on Fairfax County’s Black history

Juneteenth is tomorrow (Thursday), marking the 160th anniversary of the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation in the state.

While some festivities took place last weekend, including Vienna’s Liberty Amendments Month kick-off and Fairfax City’s celebration, Fairfax County will still play host to a number of events commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. and showcasing the historical and cultural contributions of African Americans.

Soccer fever is in the air, with the FIFA World Cup and the Tysons Community Alliance’s COPA Tysons Soccer Fest both back in action.

After making its debut last year, COPA Tysons returned this summer with a series of watch parties and promotions, culminating in a soccer festival and tournament at Ken Lawrence Park (8008 Jones Branch Drive) this Saturday (June 21).

Developer proposes townhouses in place of Reston offices near W&OD Trail

Another office complex in the Dulles Toll Road corridor is being targeted as a candidate for redevelopment as housing.

The owner of the office buildings at 1835 and 1851 Alexander Bell Drive in Reston filed a rezoning application with Fairfax County late last month that proposes turning the 7.45-acre site into a townhome community.

Union, local politicians blast Navy Federal Credit Union for change in contractor

A giant, inflatable rat towered over Electric Avenue near Navy Federal Credit Union’s Vienna headquarters on Monday (June 16), staring down commuters during the afternoon rush-hour.

Accompanied by whistle blasts and chants of “union busting” and “Navy Federal, shame on you,” the larger-than-life rodent provided an eye-catching centerpiece for a protest organized by the labor union 32BJ SEIU, which alleges that the world’s largest credit union is undermining its janitorial staff by switching to a non-union contractor.

Flood Watch to take effect in Fairfax County this afternoon

Another round of rain is expected to pass through the D.C. area this afternoon (Tuesday), potentially putting a damper on voting in the Democratic primary.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the region, including Fairfax County, that’s currently set to take effect from 2-10 p.m.

Shilla Bakery and Cafe opened its doors in Jades Shopping Center at 340 Maple Avenue West yesterday (Monday), taking over a space that had been vacant since Al Nakheel Lebanese Cafe & Market closed in 2022.

JUST IN: Virginia lifts drought watch for Fairfax County

An abundance of rain in recent weeks has alleviated the drought plaguing Northern Virginia, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) says.

The department announced this morning (Monday) that it has lifted drought advisories for the entire Commonwealth, including a drought watch for Fairfax County and the rest of Northern Virginia that had been in place since September.

FCPS surprises with purchase of discontinuing Herndon private school

Fairfax County Public Schools is taking over King Abdullah Academy’s campus in the Floris area south of Herndon.

The Fairfax County School Board voted 9-0 with three abstentions last Thursday (June 12) to approve a $150 million acquisition of approximately 30 acres at 2949, 2950 and 2954 Education Drive, where the Islamic private school will cease operations after July.

FCPD: County recreation director had ‘inappropriate’ contact with juvenile worker

An aquatics director for the Fairfax County Park Authority was arrested last week after police say he had sexual contact with a juvenile recreation center employee.

Officers were called to the Audrey Moore Rec Center (8100 Braddock Road) at Wakefield Park in Annandale at 10:49 a.m. on June 8 for a report of a sexual offense, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release.
