Rachna Sizemore Heizer has won the Democratic nomination in the race for Braddock District supervisor.

The fifth-year Fairfax County School Board member bested three other candidates in this weekend’s primary election, giving her the party’s nod in the race to succeed James Walkinshaw, who resigned last month, on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

It will take at least one more day for local Democrats to decide on their nominee in the race for Braddock District supervisor.

Voting has been extended to tomorrow after technological issues led to extremely long waits at two of the three polling places used for the primary today (Saturday), the Fairfax County Democratic Committee announced.

Come Monday, the brick-and-mortar location for one Herndon brewery will be closed.

Juicy Brewing Company, located in Herndon’s Sunset Business Park at 257 Sunset Park Drive, will shutter Sunday (Oct. 5), according to a sign on the door.

Nearly two years after plans for a Herndon location fell through, Ornery Beer Company is officially setting up shop in the neighborhood.

The brewery is already hiring for its second full-service restaurant in hopes that it will open later this month in Woodland Park Crossing, founder and CEO Randy Barnette confirmed to FFXnow.

Herndon residents will have another option for grocery shopping later this fall.

Budget supermarket chain Lidl is planning to open its latest Fairfax County location at 2110 Centreville Road on Oct. 29, a spokesperson confirmed.

A long-anticipated donut shop is still planning to open in Merrifield’s Mosaic District after an eviction scare threatened its future.

The Salty, which announced last year that it will take over the space at 2905 District Avenue vacated by Loyal Companion, is still expected to open in the future, co-owner Andy Rodriguez told FFXnow.

A staffer at Thomas Edison High School is accused of sexually assaulting two students on separate occasions, police said.

Derrick Burroughs, 40, was arrested and charged yesterday (Tuesday) with two counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of indecent liberties with a child by a custodian, the Fairfax County Police Department announced this morning.

Report finds D.C. region shedding jobs ahead of possible federal government shutdown

A report released last week confirmed the fears of Fairfax County’s leaders: that the D.C. region and Northern Virginia in particular are bearing the brunt of the economic fallout of ongoing worker and funding cuts by the Trump administration.

With the federal government potentially shutting down and many federal workers officially losing their jobs after accepting “deferred resignation” offers earlier this year at midnight tomorrow (Wednesday), Fairfax County Board of Supervisors slammed Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin — a Republican — for what he described as a lack of preemptive action.

Conditions at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Chantilly have improved in recent weeks, four of Northern Virginia’s federal legislators say.

Sen. Mark Warner, as well as Reps. James Walkinshaw, Suhas Subramanyam and Don Beyer, visited the facility last Friday (Sept. 26) “after a month of attempting to gain access.”
