Complaints from Herndon residents about a pungent odor from the James Corbalis Water Treatment Plant have led Fairfax County officials to consider diverting the wastewater into the sewer system.
Dranesville District Supervisor Jimmy Bierman explained at a Board of Supervisors meeting yesterday (Tuesday) that the issue began several weeks ago when rising algae levels in the Potomac River led to more organic matter being discharged into a state-permitted tributary of Sugarland Run, resulting in the unpleasant odor.

A 77-year-old Fair Oaks man has been arrested and charged with murder after allegedly stabbing and killing his wife at their home in the Highland Oaks neighborhood.
Officers were called to the 3900 block of Highland Oaks Drive in Fair Oaks for a report of a stabbing at 6:18 p.m. on Monday (July 29), according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Pedestrians can now cross Westpark Drive to get to and from The Boro without having to walk over to the Greensboro Drive or Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) intersections.
A new High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) pedestrian beacon was installed at Boro Place, just outside Whole Foods, in June, one of a handful of accessibility improvements that The Boro’s developer promised to deliver with its expansion of the Tysons neighborhood.

A driver who was hospitalized after crashing at the Baron Cameron Avenue and Fairfax County Parkway intersection in Reston on Monday (July 29) has died, police say.
Marjorie Fox, a 77-year-old woman from Reston, died at a hospital from life-threatening injuries she sustained in the single-vehicle crash, which occurred around 9:40 a.m., the Fairfax County Police Department announced last night (Tuesday) in a press release.

Former McLean Bible Pastor Funds Gun Law Challenges — A nonprofit started at McLean Bible Church by then-pastor Dale Sutherland “has evolved from spreading the good news to facilitating a far-reaching, multimillion-dollar legal campaign to dismantle America’s gun laws.” Now called the Constitutional Defense Fund, the organization has given funding to gun advocacy groups and a law firm that has filed at least 21 lawsuits challenging gun restrictions since 2020. Man Sentenced in Fairfax City Killing — “A Fairfax County, Va., Circuit Court judge on July 26 handed down a sentence of 28 years in prison for a 31-year-old man convicted by a jury of second-degree murder for the June 10, 2023, stabbing death of a Fairfax City man after the man propositioned him for sex.” Aaron Robertson got the maximum sentence of 40 years, but the judge suspended 12 of them. Justice HS Gets New Stadium Bathroom — “Spectators at Justice High School football games will no longer have to take care of business in a porta potty. Fortune magazine has named Chantilly the third-best place for families to live out of 2,000 cities across the U.S.
This is the first time that Chantilly has appeared in the annual rankings, which began with 25 locations in 2022. The 2023 and 2024 rankings expanded to 50 communities — one from each state — with Alexandria representing Virginia last year.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has postponed all public hearings set for today (Tuesday), including a pivotal vote on proposed data center regulations, to Sept. 10 due to a staff error.
The delay will also affect public hearings held at the board’s last meeting on July 16. It stems from a “regulatory oversight” related to new rules for advertising public hearings that the Virginia General Assembly passed earlier this year, the county announced.

A truck carrying metal debris crashed on Nutley Street near the Pan Am Shopping Center in Merrifield this morning (Tuesday), requiring an extended closure for clean-up.
Fairfax County police officers and Fire and Rescue units, including a hazmat team, were dispatched to Nutley Street at Route 29 around 11:20 a.m. for a report of a flipped tractor-trailer, according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.

Some more multi-million-dollar homes are taking shape in Great Falls.
The McLean-based company Artisan Builders announced last Tuesday (July 23) that it’s developing a new residential subdivision off of Georgetown Pike called Falls Farm. The neighborhood along Falls Farm Court will consist of 14 custom-built houses on lots that average two acres in size.

Fairfax Water’s plan to update and expand the water tank that serves much of Idylwood and Pimmit Hills has run into strong opposition from many residents of the single-family neighborhood that surrounds the site.
Resident after resident testified at a Fairfax County Planning Commission public hearing last Wednesday (July 24) that replacing the existing 700,000-gallon Poplar Heights tank with the 1.25-million-gallon tank proposed by the water authority will irrevocably damage their community and quality of life.
