    ☀️ Saturday’s forecast

    Expect a partly sunny day to become fully sunny with a high near 51, accompanied by breezy northwest winds of 8-13 mph, which will increase to 16-21 mph in the afternoon, with gusts potentially reaching 32 mph. The nighttime will be mostly clear with a low around 28 as the northwest wind, initially blowing at 6-13 mph, becomes west after midnight. Nighttime wind gusts could reach up to 22 mph.     News

    Former Army soldier Stephan Smerk was given the maximum sentence — 70 years in prison — today (Friday) for the murder of West Springfield woman Robin Lawrence in 1994.

    Smerk, 53, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Oct. 4 for stabbing and killing Lawrence in her home in an act of random violence.


    Sports

    Add another state championship to the Lake Braddock Bruins’ long list of titles in girls gymnastics.

    The Bruins recently won their 13th Virginia High School League (VHSL) state crown — a statewide record and their fourth in a row — with a 147.875 point total in the Class 6 meet at their home gymnasium in Burke last Friday (Feb. 28).


    Around Town

    More than 100 performers will take the stage when the Aurora Dance Fest returns to Capital One Hall in Tysons this Sunday (March 9).

    Organized by the Reston-based Gin Dance Company, the one-night-only festival will showcase work by 10 different dance companies, 16 choreographers and 105 dancers from around the D.C. area.

    Flowers, Fine Art & Fashion is an immersive cultural experience presented by People of The Garden LLC, where nature, creativity, and modest couture converge in a breathtaking indoor garden setting.

    Guests will journey through a living landscape featuring dramatic floral installations, botanical art, and a one-of-a-kind rectangular runway designed around lush greenery and sculptural plantings. Throughout the evening, attendees will experience a curated runway presentation showcasing modest fashion designers, alongside original fine art, artisan vendors, and interactive floral experiences.


    Countywide

    Metro leaders are taking steps that could permit the transit agency to ban people from its property if they commit crimes or otherwise demonstrate what is deemed improper behavior.

    The measure was first discussed publicly at a Jan. 30 meeting of the Metro Board of Directors’ safety and operations committee. An agency spokesman told FFXnow on Monday (March 3) that the discussion “remains ongoing.”

    A man from Bailey’s Crossroads has been convicted of hate crimes for plotting a potential mass shooting at a church in Prince William County.

    Following a four-day trial, a federal jury in Alexandria found Rui Jiang guilty yesterday (Thursday) of attempting to obstruct congregants of Park Valley Church in Haymarket from exercising their religious beliefs, using a firearm in connection to a violent crime, and sending online threats.

    Fairfax County has purchased land in the Dogue Creek watershed near Fort Belvoir for $2.8 million in a bid to prevent future development, remove an “eyesore” and restore the creek.

    In a release, Fairfax County said the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services purchased three parcels of land, around 7.9 acres in total.


    News

    The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors agreed on Tuesday (March 4) to expedite the planning and zoning process for construction of a new Fire Station #29 at 8300 Jones Branch Drive in Tysons.

    Acting unanimously, supervisors directed county staff to concurrently process a site plan and building plans for the facility while a proffer condition amendment is also being processed.

    Seventeen government buildings around Fairfax County, including the U.S. Geological Survey headquarters, could be going up for sale amid federal spending cuts.

    Buildings in Reston, and Springfield were among 443 federal properties listed by the General Services Administration (GSA) as “not core to government operations” on Tuesday (March 4) before that list was taken down just one day later.
