Man who led police chase from Ashburn to Vienna charged with carjacking and more

A Leesburg man faces multiple criminal charges from two different Northern Virginia counties in connection to a police pursuit that started in Ashburn and ended just outside the Town of Vienna.

On Monday (Oct. 30) afternoon, the Fairfax County Police Department arrested 44-year-old Joseph Daniel at the intersection of Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and Flint Hill Road in Oakton after he allegedly attempted to carjack two vehicles.

Helicopter video shared by the FCPD shows a man trying the driver’s doors of a gray minivan and a red sedan while running away from officers, who ultimately tackle him to the ground.

The FCPD has now charged Daniel with carjacking, disregarding police commands to stop, a felony hit-and-run, driving without a license and reckless driving, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office announced yesterday (Tuesday).

The Loudoun sheriff’s office is expected to file charges of its own related to the pursuit, which began shortly before 2 p.m. after someone called 911 to report an “abduction in progress” at a Wells Fargo bank (43650 Yukon Drive) in Ashburn.

“The LCSO continues to investigate the initial abduction call and multiple charges are pending related to the pursuit,” the office said in a news release, adding that information on the charges will be released “once they are placed.”

According to the LCSO, the vehicle Daniel was driving during the chase — a 2005 Hummer H2 — had been reported stolen in Chantilly on March 16, noting that SUV “had been repainted from its original green color to black.”

The FCPD said on Monday that, after taking Daniel into custody, its officers found a woman inside the Hummer “a short distance away.” She was treated “for minor injuries related to the abduction.”

The sheriff’s office says it already had several “open” warrants for Daniel charging him with two counts of possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, fleeing and eluding, driving without a license, and three counts of violating probation.

Daniel is currently in custody without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

The pursuit and arrest occurred in the same afternoon that the FCPD dealt with a carjacking in Tysons. That incident began at 4:32 p.m. when police responded to a reported commercial theft at Tysons Corner Center and concluded shortly thereafter when the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle into a nearby Shell gas station.

Man crashes onto gas station pump to end police chase in Tysons

(Updated at 3:45 p.m.) A stolen vehicle wound up on top of a gas pump after a brief police chase near Tysons Corner Center yesterday (Monday).

Fairfax County police arrested a man suspected of larceny and carjacking after he crashed into the Shell gas station at 8103 Leesburg Pike around 4:36 p.m., according to the police scanner on Open MHz.

“The suspect was running from the mall after committing a larceny when he carjacked a second victim in a parking garage,” the Fairfax County Police Department said. “He left the location at a high rate of speed and crashed a short distance away.”

According to an update from FCPD, an officer responded to a store in Tysons Corner Center at 4:32 p.m. after loss prevention personnel reported seeing the man — identified as a 20-year-old from D.C. — steal “over $2,500 worth of merchandise.”

Upon seeing the officer, the man fled into a nearby parking garage, police say. Scanner traffic suggests the garage was the one outside Bloomingdale’s.

The FCPD says the man then tried to open the door of a 2013 Kia Optima that entered the garage.

“The victim, a teenager, was alarmed and drove away, with [the man] holding onto the door and being dragged for a short distance,” police said. “The victim stopped a short distance away and exited the car.”

Per the police scanner, an officer told the dispatcher at 4:32 p.m. that the man “carjacked somebody” and took off onto Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), jumping a curb in the process.

The officer said the suspect initially headed west before attempting to make a U-turn at Gallows Road. However, he lost control of his vehicle and “took out a gas station,” according to police.

The man got out of the car and briefly went into the convenience store but then came out and surrendered to police.

Officers said at 4:36 p.m. that no further police assistance was needed, but a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department unit should be called.

“They got a fuel leak here. He nailed one of the gas pumps, took it out,” an officer said.

Police also requested an ambulance to treat injuries to the man, reporting that he sustained “facial injuries” after getting “dragged by the vehicle.”

The FCPD confirmed that the man was taken to a hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening, and the person who got carjacked didn’t get injured.

The man has been charged with carjacking and grand larceny, the FCPD announced today (Tuesday). He’s currently in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.

FCPD: Teen arrested for Tysons carjacking, victim hit by liquid candy

A Maryland teen was arrested last night (Thursday) for a carjacking at Tysons Corner Center where the victim was hit by a mystery fluid that turned out to be candy.

The 14-year-old and another teenager stole a BMW X5 yesterday from a man who was sitting in the SUV while parked in one of the mall’s garages, the Fairfax County Police Department said.

Detectives with the department’s Tysons Urban Team responded to the incident at 6:23 p.m.

“Two juvenile suspects approached the victim, an adult man, who was sitting in his car, and knocked on his window,” police said. “When the victim exited his car, the juveniles threatened to throw ‘acid’ on the victim.”

One of the teens then got into the vehicle, while the other threw a green liquid on the victim before they fled the scene, according to police.

Contrary to the threat, the liquid did “not appear to be caustic,” and no injuries were reported, the FCPD said in a tweet last night. Detectives have now identified the substance as “liquid sour candy,” per an update released today.

The 14-year-old who has been arrested was spotted fleeing in the stolen vehicle by an off-duty detective with D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, according to the FCPD. The teen entered Maryland, where they were taken into custody by Montgomery County police.

Police are still looking for the second teen, who’s described as a boy with short black hair. The FCPD says he was wearing black pants, a black shirt, and red and white sneakers.

Armed, masked carjacking suspects arrested after Richmond Highway chase

(Updated at 3:50 p.m.) Two people suspected of carjacking in Maryland were arrested by Fairfax County and Maryland police yesterday (Sunday) after a pursuit that started on Richmond Highway (Route 1) and later crossed state lines.

Police are still on the lookout for two suspects, including one person who may have been wearing a Spider-Man mask or costume, the Fairfax County Police Department said today (Monday).

Around 5:22 p.m., officers came across a reportedly stolen BMW 535 in 7500 block of Richmond Highway in Hybla Valley after getting an automated license plate reader alert, according to radio traffic compiled by public safety scanner watcher Romero.

As three units closed in on the car, the driver took off onto Richmond Highway, “intentionally” hitting police cruisers and driving north in the southbound lanes at around 46 mph, police said. A police helicopter was called to join the chase as it entered Huntington.

The pursuit moved onto the Capital Beltway (I-495) into Maryland, getting Prince George’s County police and Maryland State Police involved.

At one point, the vehicle’s tire blew out, but the chase continued until the occupants bailed out around the exit to Morningside, Maryland. An officer reported that two guns were dropped in the highway median as at least two people ran into nearby woods.

One man was quickly taken into custody, while another was apprehended by 5:57 p.m. The police response blocked off the highway’s northbound lanes.

The FCPD had initially reported — and scanner traffic suggested — that three people had been taken into custody, but Sgt. Jacob Pearce says it has now been determined that two people “got away.”

In addition to the man reportedly dressed like Spider-Man, the other suspects wore “patterned ski-masks,” Pearce told FFXnow.

The BMW had been carjacked in District Heights on April 9, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department, which says five firearms were found inside the vehicle.

Prince George’s has charged the two men currently in custody — identified as 21-year-old Terrell Talley and 18-year-old Marquette Staton — with unauthorized use of a vehicle and firearms offenses in connection to the carjacking.

Additional charges from Fairfax County are expected to be announced later.

JUST IN: Carjacked vehicle found in Tysons, hits cars and police cruisers during pursuit

(Updated at 5:20 p.m.) Three people have been arrested for carjacking after a short vehicle pursuit in Tysons that saw collisions with multiple other vehicles, including police cruisers.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, one of its new automated license plate readers sent an alert to officers for an Audi Q5 that had been reported stolen from Maryland, yesterday (Wednesday).

The officers found the SUV in a parking garage at the corner of International Drive and Fletcher Street around 2:12 p.m., according to public safety scanner traffic.

Scanner traffic indicates that the vehicle was reported stolen from Prince George’s County in an armed carjacking. A dispatcher warned that the occupants may be armed.

Around 3:13 p.m., three individuals then got into the Audi and attempted to drive away on Leesburg Pike (Route 7), according to police.

“The driver struck two cruisers, 2-3 community member cars before stopping a short distance away,” the FCPD tweeted. “All three occupants have been arrest[ed] and two firearms have been recovered.”

According to a 3:30 p.m. Fairfax Alert, eastbound Leesburg Pike was shut down at International Drive for the “police activity.”
