The owners of Reston National Golf Course have teed up another redevelopment proposal, but this time, with public opposition expected to remain high, they’re considering a backup plan that would involve renovations and more limited housing.

Property owner War Horse Cities enlisted the developer NVR to nominate the 168-acre golf course at 11875 Sunrise Valley Drive for a Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan amendment that would allow housing on part of the site, while turning the rest into publicly accessible recreational or open space.

Franconia Development Partners is moving forward with its proposal to replace the Franconia Governmental Center with affordable housing.

After securing an interim agreement with the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) last fall, SCG Development, NFP Affordable Housing Corp. and Good Shepherd Housing submitted a rezoning application to the county on March 21 calling for 120 affordable multi-family units at 6121 Franconia Road.

Community members will now get their first chance to weigh in on dozens of pitches submitted to Fairfax County earlier this year for potential future developments.

The county will host a series of community meetings over the next month so the developers can share information about their proposals with the public, who can then ask questions and provide feedback.

For over a decade, mixed-use, multi-family residential developments have been the defining building type around Northern Virginia. A recent presentation about redevelopment at the Hunters Branch office complex in Oakton, however, indicated that type of development may be in peril.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended on March 12 that the Board of Supervisors approve a comprehensive plan amendment to allow housing on the nearly 14-acre office campus at 9300 and 9302 Route 29.

After hearing from both sides, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday (March 18) unanimously approved a Comprehensive Plan amendment to allow mixed-use development on the 33-acre former AT&T site at the intersection of Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) and Jermantown Road.

Land currently zoned for industrial use across Fairfax County could be converted to residential zoning in an effort to bring more housing stock to the county.

As part of a larger “Plan Forward” initiative started in 2022, Department of Planning and Development (DPD) staff have proposed amending the county’s comprehensive plan to allow more flexibility for industrial land to turn into residential development, while also retaining some designated industrial areas.

A new plan to add a hotel and hospitality venue to a historic home at 10230 Main Street in the City of Fairfax got a mix of cautious interest and firm rejection from city council members last week.

The proposal from developer Ox Hill Companies would keep the home intact while building an extensive resort around the property, raising some concerns from abutting townhouse owners as well as the Fairfax City Council.

The trustees of a Dunn Loring church have pulled back a proposal that some day might see their 4.2-acre site redeveloped for multi-family housing with a child-care center and new worship space.

Trustees of the Vine Church, a United Methodist-affiliated congregation located at 2501 Gallows Road, had nominated the site to be considered for Fairfax County’s site-specific plan amendment (SSPA) process, which allows members of the public to propose land use changes.

The Arlington-based developer Paradigm Companies recently submitted a rezoning application to Fairfax County proposing to replace the gym’s low-lying building at 8250 Greensboro Drive with a pair of residential high-rises.

A potential legal battle is brewing over the stalled project to revitalize Herndon’s downtown.

The Town of Herndon filed a declaration in Fairfax County Circuit Court last Friday (Feb. 28) terminating Comstock Companies’ rights to the nearly 5-acre block at the northeast corner of Center and Elden streets that the developer had planned to turn into an arts center, apartments, retail space and a parking garage.
