The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a conceptual development plan on Tuesday (Nov. 18) that calls for a mix of housing, office, retail, hotel and park space on a key 4.8-acre parcel near the Spring Hill Metro station in the Tysons West area.

The unanimous vote in support of Piazza at Tysons is the latest step in a redevelopment effort that has been under review for five years.

After years of planning, the West Falls Church Metro station’s transformation into a mixed-use neighborhood is officially underway.

A developer is looking to replace more than a dozen single-family houses in Woodlawn with new townhouses.

Applicant K. Hovnanian at Mount Vernon Gateway submitted the proposal to Fairfax County on Oct. 28 for 66 single family attached townhomes and 78 stacked townhomes on the 7.5-acre property at 8115 Janna Lee Avenue.

Plans to redevelop a portion of the Courthouse Plaza Shopping Center near Old Town Fairfax into housing were rejected by Fairfax City Council members late last month, leaving the aging site’s future in limbo once again.

The 4-2 vote on Oct. 28 came three months after council members opted on July 22 to delay a final decision in hopes a revamped proposal by developer Combined Properties would address concerns raised by critics throughout the development process.

All of the commissioners present for the Oct. 22 public hearing recommended that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approve a conceptual development plan for the Piazza at Tysons, which would replace a gas station and the Tysons 3 shopping center near the Spring Hill Metro station with housing, office, over 2 acres of park space and, potentially, a public arts and culture center.

The first phase of work is underway in the redevelopment of Isaac Newton Square, an office park in Reston that will be transformed into a mixed-use neighborhood in phases over the next 20 years.

Work started at the end of September at the northern end of the site to preserve a line of willow oak trees located along Isaac Newton Square North near Wiehle Avenue. Improvements to streets and infrastructure, such as stormwater facilities, utilities and bioretention facilities, are also in the works.
