Fairfax County’s farmers markets are going plastic-free this month.

Starting tomorrow (Wednesday) through July 28, visitors to the Fairfax County Park Authority’s farmers markets are encouraged to bring reusable shopping bags in support of Plastic Free July, a global initiative fighting plastic pollution.

Lake Fairfax Park isn’t the only spot in Fairfax County planning an early Fourth of July party this year.

The Fairfax County Park Authority’s Independence Day celebration in Reston will compete tomorrow (Saturday) with festivities in McLean, Lorton and Mount Vernon, where George Washington’s estate will kick off two days of fireworks tonight (Friday).

The Fairfax County Park Authority will celebrate American colonists’ declaration of independence from Great Britain a little early this year, hosting its annual fireworks celebration this Saturday (June 29) at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston.

The event starts at 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive well before dark — at noon — giving attendees plenty of time to find the choicest spots for live music and the 9 p.m. fireworks show. There is no admission to the park after 8:45 p.m.

Metro is planning to spend the summer hyping up the D.C. region’s public transportation, starting with a family-friendly celebration for transit lovers this Saturday (June 29).

The inaugural Metro Fest at the Franconia Metro station is open to the public at no cost. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include arts and crafts, games, entertainment, snacks, water, and Metro-branded giveaways, according to a press release.

A Maryland-based nonprofit that supports athletes with limited mobility will stride across state lines this fall with a new 5K event in Reston.

Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA) opened registration last week for its first Virginia RunFest, which will be held at Reston Town Center on Saturday, Sept. 22. It will be the organization’s first-ever event in Virginia, supplementing the race that it has hosted in Hunt Valley, Maryland, where it’s headquartered, for the past 16 years.

Fairfax City is gearing up for its annual summer beer crawl this weekend.

The event, hosted by Fairfax City Economic Development, the Old Town Fairfax Business Association, and the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, will take place this Saturday, June 22, from noon to 6 p.m.

Classes are out, and summer reading is in for Fairfax County students.

Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) officially kicked off its annual Summer Reading Program on Wednesday (June 12), encouraging youngsters and adults alike to dig into books and tackle various literary activities to earn prizes.

The Out & About Festival is returning to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts this month with a new lineup of LGBTQ musicians.

Landing in the middle of Pride Month, the day-long festival will bring performances to all three of the park’s outdoor stages from 10:30 a.m. to 9:35 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, along with food trucks, games and vendor booths.

Juneteenth is just under a week away, but in many places around Fairfax County, the celebrations will start this weekend.

Officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, it is observed annually on June 19, the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to liberate some 250,000 enslaved people who had not been freed despite President Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
