Fairfax County police have arrested a man who allegedly stole a vehicle and tried to abduct a toddler at Fair Oaks Mall.

Officers were called to the 11700 block of Fair Oaks Shopping Center at 11:43 a.m. last Thursday (July 18) for a report of an abduction, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

A Leesburg man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a vehicle crash that killed a Lorton woman in April.

Steven Kowalik, 64, was traveling north on Route 123 (Ox Road) around 5 p.m. on April 23 when he lost consciousness, drove over a grass median and crashed head-on into a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze sedan near Davis Drive in Lorton, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

The Fairfax County Police Department is seeking the public’s help to identify a man accused of exposing himself at a store in Groveton last month.

The man allegedly exposed himself to a 9-year-old girl who was with her mother inside the Target store at 6600 Richmond Highway, according to scanner traffic.

A driver was killed on Friday (July 11) after another motorist apparently ran a red light on Monument Drive and crashed into his car, police say.

Officers were dispatched to the two-vehicle crash at the Fairfax County Parkway intersection near Fair Lakes around 1:22 p.m., according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Updated — An 18-year-old man from Lorton has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding for allegedly assaulting a Fairfax Connector bus driver earlier this month.

The Fairfax County Police Department announced on July 21 that Javantai Johnson was identified as the man behind the assault based on a community tip. He was arrested on Saturday, July 19 in Stone Ridge with help from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and is now in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.

Fairfax County police are now turning to the public for help with identifying a suspect in a stabbing that occurred late last month at the Build America Plaza retail center in Bailey’s Crossroads.

Officers responded to the 3800 block of South George Mason Drive at 6:03 a.m. on June 29 after a man called 911, reporting that he had been stabbed twice, according to scanner traffic.

Though fireworks are a traditional staple of Independence Day celebrations, they tend to be less welcome even on that occasion when unleashed without warning.

Such was the case last Friday (July 4) at a McDonald’s in Reston. Multiple people reportedly set off fireworks inside the fast-food restaurant, sparking havoc as patrons and employees fled the quickly smoke-filled scene.

Due to budget cuts, the Fairfax County Police Department is no longer offering free child car seat installations and inspections.

The department officially terminated its child safety seat program this past Tuesday (July 1), which marked the first day of fiscal year 2026.

Local police arrested a Centreville man last week after finding that he had allegedly exposed himself multiple times in the Greenbriar area near Fair Lakes.

Most recently, a victim told officers on April 24 that they saw “a man expose himself” before running away. Officers responded at 4:10 p.m. to the intersection of Maple Run Lane and Middle Ridge Drive for the report, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release today (Monday).
