The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) has begun operations at its newly expanded Northern Virginia Distribution Center.

After more than a year of construction, the nonprofit unveiled the 43,000-square-foot warehouse in Newington with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday (Sept. 26), celebrating the facility as a critical step forward in its ability to help feed people across the D.C. area.

Two men who pleaded guilty to stealing more than 50 firearms from a Newington gun store will each spend most of the next decade in prison.

Cedric Minger, 22, of Maryland was sentenced yesterday (Wednesday) to serve nine years and six months behind bars by the U.S. District Court for Virginia’s Eastern District. Victor Jones, 22, of Washington, was sentenced to nine years earlier this month in the same court.

A local diner chain is expanding its footprint across Northern Virginia.

The family-owned and operated Bob & Edith’s, which already features seven different locations, will open its next restaurant in Hilltop Village Center on the border of Newington and Franconia.

A trash collection facility in Lorton is the first Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) building to install a rooftop solar system.

The Newington Collections Facility’s 150-kilowatt photovoltaic solar array will reduce carbon emissions “the same amount per year as recycling the contents of nearly five garbage trucks full of waste,” DPWES announced in a news release on Wednesday (July 31).

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has asked CSX Transportation to share the load when it comes to moving sewer infrastructure affected by its plans for a third passenger rail line connecting Franconia and Lorton.

Last week, the board unanimously approved a letter to the North American rail company urging it to assist with relocating several sanitary sewers at risk of contamination during the construction of the Virginia Railway Express rail line.

A motorcyclist died in a crash early yesterday (Sunday) morning on Rolling Road in Newington, police say.

Officers responded at 5:18 a.m. to a crash involving a 2003 Honda 1300 motorcycle near Delong Drive, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Police initially said the motorcyclist, Cornell Parish III, a 32-year-old Woodbridge resident, died at the scene, but an update published around 9 p.m. says he was “taken to the hospital and pronounced deceased.”

Fairfax County police are looking for a man who allegedly stole a Newington resident’s dog.

Officers were called to the 7500 block of Tralee Woods Court at 7:50 a.m. on Monday (Nov. 27) in response to a reported burglary, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

A three-vehicle crash on Fairfax County Parkway in Newington has taken a fatal turn, about a month after it occurred.

James Berry Gautier, an 83-year-old Burke resident, has died roughly four weeks after a van collided with his car near Loisdale Road, the Fairfax County Police Department announced yesterday (Tuesday).

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) is unveiling its first electric refuse trash truck today (Friday).

The truck will “pick up residential trash and yard waste on routes throughout the county,” DPWES announced. The county says the truck is “a move that will save money and protect the environment.”

A man from Maryland was recently arrested in D.C. in connection with a gun store burglary in Newington, the Fairfax County Police Department announced yesterday (Monday).

Arrested by Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agents on May 22, the 20-year-old is one of four men suspected by police of stealing 53 firearms from Dominion Defense (7200 Fullerton Road) between 3-4 a.m. on April 29.
