The Mykle Lyons Commemorative Concert and Jazz Festival will return to Lake Anne Plaza in Reston this Saturday (Aug. 31).

For its fourth year, the annual celebration of Lyons, a jazz musician and longtime Reston resident who died in 2021, will seek to continue his legacy by raising funds to create a music education initiative for Reston Association.

It’s that time of the year when algae tends to surface in Reston’s lakes.

Reston Association reported yesterday (Monday) that “potentially harmful” blue-green algae was seen that morning in Lake Anne, advising community members to avoid contact with the lake’s waters.

Reston Association’s summer camps have donated over 1,000 pounds of cans for a local food pantry with a “Cans from Campers” food drive.

Over nine weeks, the kids and teens participating in Reston Camps — which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year — collected a total of 1,120 pounds of cans to benefit South Lakes High School’s food pantry, according to RA Recreation Manager Katherine Caffrey.

Reston Association’s new, permanent website is almost ready to go live.

The redesigned website is expected to roll out September, communications director Cara O’Donnell told the Board of Directors on July 25. The launch would come more than four years after outdated software prompted the homeowners’ association to take down its previous online home and transition to a temporary, more limited platform.

The renovations at Reston’s Glade Tennis Courts, which were initially damaged by a storm in 2018, are nearing completion and expected to wrap up by Labor Day weekend.

Crews are currently installing a French drain — a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe that directs water away from an area — at the front entrance to address previous runoff issues, Reston Association Director of Capital Projects Chris Schumaker said in a YouTube video released last Friday (July 26).

Reston Association has granted its Lakes Equity Working Group (LEWG) more time to complete its report on lake usage and accessibility until next summer.

The RA Board of Directors’ liaison to the group, Irwin Flashman, said at the board’s July 11 meeting that although the group has made progress, they needed more time to gather comprehensive data.

Reston Association is marking the 50th anniversary of Reston Camps with a reunion event for former camp staff.

The reunion, which also serves as a fundraiser for the Friends of Reston’s “Send a Kid to Camp” program, will allow former counselors to reconnect, share memories, and reflect on how their experiences with Reston Camps have influenced their careers, according to a press release.

Reston Association plans to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Reston’s founding with a community pool party and cookout later this month.

The event, free for all RA members and recreation pass holders, is set for 4 p.m. July 20 at the Lake Newport Pool and Recreation Area (11601 Lake Newport Road).

Reston Association is preparing to serve up a full renovation of its Barton Hill tennis courts next month.

The four existing courts at 1901 Barton Hill off of Sunrise Valley Drive will close after June 30 in anticipation of the renovation, which is expected to begin in July, RA announced in a newsletter on Friday (June 14).

Reston Association has decided not to move forward with a proposed name change for its Shadowood Recreation Area, which includes a swimming pool and tennis courts.

The RA Board of Directors voted 7-2 last night (Thursday) to retain the current name of the recreational area at 2201 Springwood Drive after public feedback suggested community members were split on a change.
