More federal employees soon may be back working full-time from their offices — at least those who don’t get laid off.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors directed staff on Tuesday (Feb. 4) to develop a communication and outreach strategy to inform workers who will be returning to the office, as ordered by the Trump administration, of the full range of available transit options and ways to make commuting less costly.

One of the pedestrians struck in a hit-and-run crash on Richmond Highway earlier this week has died, police say.

Erica Tibbs, 33, of Alexandria and her 5-year-old child were crossing Richmond Highway (Route 1) near the Buckman Road intersection in Hybla Valley around 8:34 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 29) when an SUV driver hit them, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

A woman and a child were critically injured in a crash this evening (Wednesday) on Richmond Highway in Mount Vernon, police say.

According to scanner traffic, officers and emergency medical responders were dispatched to Richmond Highway (Route 1) at Mount Vernon Highway around 8:35 p.m. for the crash, which was described by police as a hit-and-run.

Fairfax County is ramping up property demolitions in anticipation of its long-planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along Richmond Highway.

Transportation officials shared during an in-person public meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 15 that nine buildings have already been cleared to make way for the project. Another 21 demolitions are scheduled by the end of 2025 as the county works to prepare the corridor for utility relocations in 2026 and eventual construction in 2028.

The driver of a vehicle reported as stolen was arrested this morning (Monday) following a brief police pursuit on Richmond Highway in the Huntington area.

According to the Virginia State Police, troopers tried to stop the driver of a vehicle that turned out to be stolen at the intersection of Richmond Highway (Route 1) and Quander Road around 3 a.m. Instead of stopping, the driver fled north in Route 1’s southbound lanes.

Several people have been hospitalized following a police pursuit that turned into a three-vehicle crash on Richmond Highway in Belle Haven, police say.

Virginia State Police (VSP) troopers were called at 11:19 p.m. yesterday (Monday) to assist Alexandria Police with a Hyundai Elantra that had been reported stolen in Prince George’s County, Maryland, according to a news release.

Fairfax County may need to invoke eminent domain to secure more than a dozen properties along Richmond Highway for its new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

Earlier this week, the Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to move ahead with acquiring land rights to 13 commercial and residential properties — including a Wells Fargo bank, a pet hospital, and a hotel — by early December for the new bus route, known as “The One,” regardless of whether settlement agreements are in place.
