The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is planning more service changes for Fairfax Connector, specifically in the Reston, Herndon, Springfield and Centreville areas of the county.

Set to be discussed at two online community meetings this week, the proposals would serve to increase frequency, realign some service and add a new Route 652. Planned for elimination is Route 599, a rush-hour express service that runs between Reston and the Pentagon, Pentagon City and Crystal City areas of Arlington.

If approved by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, they could take effect next April.

“The proposed service changes are designed to improve the customer experience and increase ridership through improved connectivity, on-time performance and service reliability,” said Freddy Serrano, head of communications for FCDOT.

A proposal to add a Route 652, which will operate between Centreville Road, Route 50, Franklin Farm and the Stringfellow Park-and-Ride lot during peak hours, came after input from the public, Serrano said.

More frequent service is slated for Route 352, a circulator connecting nearby areas to the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail and Virginia Railway Express stations, and for Route 642, which runs through the Centreville area.

Route 353, another circulator route in the Springfield area, could be realigned to serve the new Franconia Governmental Center.

The current Route 599 between Reston and the Pentagon area have other options is on the chopping block, because riders have other options for traveling through that corridor, including Fairfax Connector Route 598 and Metro’s Silver and Blue lines, to travel through the corridor served by the route, Serrano said.

Online meetings will be held on the following dates and times:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 12 at noon: Participants can join via Microsoft Teams or call 571-429-5982 and enter the conference-ID number 299 038 507#.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.: Participants can join via Microsoft Teams or call 571-429-5982 and enter conference-ID number 383 053 31#

Recordings of the meetings will be posted on the Fairfax Connector website, along with a PDF file of the presentation.

Comments on the proposed changes will be accepted through Nov. 26 via an online survey opening today (Tuesday).
