Feedback wanted on proposed Fairfax Connector service changes for 2026

County officials are currently seeking feedback on proposed changes to Fairfax Connector bus service early next year.

Through Nov. 12, residents can weigh in on the proposal, which would only affect six different routes.

The affected routes would include:

  • 335: Fort Belvoir Express
  • 401: Backlick-Gallows Road Northbound
  • 402: Backlick-Gallows Road Southbound
  • 553: Kingstream-Herndon-Fox Mill
  • 651: Chantilly-Monument Drive
  • 983: Dulles Airport-Udvar Hazy

For the Backlick and Chantilly routes, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation has proposed adjusting their weekday schedules to “improve service reliability,” according to a presentation.

Service on Route 553 will similarly become slightly less frequent, with peak travel times ticking up from 20 to 25 minutes, but FCDOT says the change would make service more reliable.

A detour would be made permanent on the Fort Belvoir Express, while Route 983 would see more frequent service on weekends, shortening the gap between buses from an hour to anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour.

“The proposed adjustments aim to improve service reliability and better meet rider demand,” Fairfax Connector said in a news release.

In addition to the information already featured online, FCDOT plans to answer questions at two virtual open houses scheduled for Nov. 5: one at noon, followed by one at 7 p.m.

Links for accessing the virtual meeting and an already-open survey are available on the Fairfax Connector’s webpage.

The proposed service adjustments are expected to be presented to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for its approval this fall or winter.
