Fairfax County is seeking public input on 14 proposed new Capital Bikeshare stations.
Officials with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation held a virtual information session on Wednesday (April 8) to discuss a planned expansion of the system throughout the I-66 corridor.
Capital Bikeshare is a joint venture owned by Fairfax and Arlington counties, the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax, D.C., and Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland. Operated by Lyft, it allows people to rent bicycles for rides between 800 stations in the region.
Fairfax County has 94 existing stations, and riders took more than 40,000 trips in 2025. The county is already planning to add 27 new ones this year in the areas of Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads, Seven Corners, Mount Vernon and Belle View.
The Town of Vienna also anticipates installing its first stations this summer.
The expansion under consideration would add stops along the I-66 Parallel Trail between Centreville and Dunn Loring. Each station would have seven or eight docks for bikes with individual solar panels and improved locking mechanisms, according to FCDOT.
The county has $510,000 earmarked from the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission’s I-66 Commuter Choice grant program for the stations.
Hannah Cacner, a county transportation planner, said that the locations were identified by county staff, but still require permit approval from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
“Since we haven’t gone through that permit process yet, we’ll have a little more flexibility with our final locations,” she said.
Once the public input process wraps up, the supervisor for each district containing a new stop will have final say over the approved locations, which extend from Merrifield and Dunn Loring west into the Fair Oaks and Legato area.
Nine stops are in Supervisor Dalia Palchik’s Providence District, four are in Supervisor Rachna Heizer’s Braddock District and one is in Supervisor Pat Herrity’s Springfield District.

The proposed stations would be located near the:
- Intersection of Legato and Dixie Hill roads
- Monument Drive Transit Center
- Intersection of Government Center Parkway and Ridge Top Road
- Entrance of the Fairfax County Government Center
- Intersection of Chain Bridge Road and Viera Lane
- Intersection of Bushman Drive and the I-66 Parallel Trail
- Intersection of Blake Lane and Platten Drive
- North side of the Vienna Metro station
- Providence Place (formerly Pan Am) Shopping Center along Route 29
- Gallows Road intersections with Strawberry Lane, Providence Forest Drive and Electric Avenue
- Intersection of Route and Hollywood Road
- Fairfax County Department of Transportation near the intersection of Legato Road and Halstead Street
The county is seeking public input via an online survey through May 1. The survey can be found at publicinput.com/cabi-66corridor.
