Reston Regional Library nears 10-week closure for renovations

Tomorrow (Friday) will be Reston residents’ last chance to visit their local library before it closes for the remainder of the summer.

Fairfax County Public Library announced this spring that the Reston Regional Library would close for approximately 10 weeks, starting Saturday, June 29, for renovations. Operating hours on Fridays are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so any materials on hold should be picked up before then or redirected to another branch.

FCPD: Over $100K in handbags stolen from Tysons Galleria store

Fairfax County police are searching for six people who allegedly stole over $100,000 worth of handbags from a department store at Tysons Galleria on Tuesday (June 25).

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, detectives responded to a robbery “at a high-end retail store” in the 2000 block of International Drive at 3:42 p.m.

Herndon proposes new look and amenities outside Old Town Hall

The Town of Herndon hopes to bring more energy to the plaza outside Old Town Hall by giving it a new look and additional amenities.

Town staff will present updated plans for landscaping, a new pergola and other design changes to the Historic District Review Board when it meets at 7 p.m. today (Tuesday).

Marshall HS students help draft Congressional bill to boost teen voter registration

Future high school students across the U.S. may find it easier to register to vote, an expansion of access that would be made possible in part by some current students at Marshall High School.

A group of students at the Pimmit Hills school spent the past year advocating for federal legislation that would designate all high schools as voter registration agencies, allowing them to host registration drives and receive reimbursement for the costs.

Firefighters battle two-alarm fire at Idylwood apartments

A fire blazed through multiple units of an apartment complex in Idylwood this morning (Wednesday), prompting a heavy response by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

Units were called to the Falls Church Gardens Condominiums in the 2700 block of Hollywood Road around 9:15 a.m. for what turned into a two-alarm apartment fire.

GMU breaks ground on building for Green Machine pep band, athletics

Construction work is underway on a new athletics and activity facility for George Mason University’s Fairfax campus.

Contractor Hoar Construction announced last Thursday (June 20) that it has broken ground on a 25,000-square-foot Activities Community Wellness Building, which will give GMU’s acclaimed Green Machine pep band its first dedicated home, among other functions.

A woman was killed and a man got injured in a crash just south of Route 29 in Centreville on Monday (June 24), police say.

Officers responded to the intersection of Braddock and Pickwick roads around 9:50 p.m. after getting a call that two pedestrians had been hit by a driver, the Fairfax County Police Department reported in a press release published last night (Tuesday).

The owner and founder of The Fermented Pig, a beloved mainstay at local farmers’ markets, has died.

Josh Plante died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 12, the artisanal meat supplier announced a day later on social media. Most of The Fermented Pig’s operations, including the recently opened Merrifield retail store, have closed “until further notice.”

Kingstowne residents are reeling after a fire blazed through 10 townhomes yesterday (Monday).

No injuries were reported in the two-alarm fire, which drew firefighters to the 6900 block of Banchory Court in the Terrington neighborhood around 12:40 p.m., the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department says.

Transportation officials suggest upgrading popular Metrobus route ahead of Route 7 BRT

With Route 7 still years away from getting a bus rapid transit (BRT) system, regional transportation planners want to improve Metro’s existing service in the corridor from Tysons to Alexandria.

In response to feedback suggesting the process could be sped up, the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) is developing a strategic implementation plan that considers short-term enhancements for Metrobus 28A, even as it keeps studying how to eventually convert the route into a higher-capacity, higher-frequency BRT.
