Three decades later, and appropriately at a homecoming game, a standout football season recorded by the Potomac School Panthers was celebrated.

During halftime of Potomac School’s home Oct. 19 high-school contest against the Maret Frogs, eight members (players and coaches) for the groundbreaking 1993 campaign gathered at midfield and listened to game announcer Glenn Adamac read the many first accomplishments amassed by that McLean private-school squad.

With a 30-0 road victory over the McLean Highlanders on Oct. 18, the Herndon Hornets recorded their third shutout of the high-school football season.

The Hornets improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty District with the win over McLean (3-5, 0-3). The victory also snapped a two-game losing streak.

By shooting rounds in the 70s, eight golfers from Fairfax County high school teams earned berths at a qualifying competition to play in the upcoming Girls State Open.

Resulting from their strong play, three players from Robinson and one each from Fairfax, Langley, West Potomac, Woodson and Lake Braddock will participate in the 18-hole Virginia High School League tournament Oct. 28 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

With another close victory, confidence is riding high for the young Oakton Cougars football team.

Oakton, just a one-win team last fall, improved to 4-3 Oct. 18 with a 48-47 overtime home victory over the South Lakes Seahawks in Concorde District high-school action.

The defending Liberty District and Class 6 state champion Langley Saxons are having another strong girls volleyball season, with a 19-1 record as the regular season nears its finish.

Langley leads the district with a 10-0 mark and 3-0 victories against each opponent, with two matches to play, and a 14-match winning streak overall.

Despite missing at least three key starters, the Potomac School Panthers stayed close and had a chance to win with just seconds remaining.

Led by a hard-playing and physical defense, the host Panthers were ahead of the high-scoring Maret Frogs late in the game until losing the high-school football contest, 12-7, on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Middle-school cross-country meets were the name of the game across Fairfax County Saturday morning (Oct. 19).

Hundreds of girls and boys runners in grades seven and eight participated in 3,000-meter races in different areas of the county.

Tight games have been the norm in recent years when the Liberty District rivals Langley Saxons and Yorktown Patriots met in high-school football action.

But not during the Friday (Oct. 18) regular-season clash. Host Langley won, 48-14, by taking control right from the start.

Led by the running of Ethan Lebkisher and a punishing ground game, the Marshall Statesmen won big in their latest high-school football game.

The Statesmen (6-2, 3-1) routed the visiting Wakefield Warriors (2-6, 0-4) by a 40-15 score in a Liberty District game Friday night (Oct. 18). Marshall is now tied for second place in the district with the Langley Saxons (7-1, 3-1).

Female competitors will take the spotlight for the remainder of the 2024 Virginia High School League golf season.

Beginning Monday (Oct. 21), players throughout Northern Virginia and across the commonwealth will participate in state-tournament qualifying events. The following Monday (Oct. 28), those who earned berths will play in the Girls State Open for all enrollment classifications combined at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
