Despite missing at least three key starters, the Potomac School Panthers stayed close and had a chance to win with just seconds remaining.

Led by a hard-playing and physical defense, the host Panthers were ahead of the high-scoring Maret Frogs late in the game until losing the high-school football contest, 12-7, on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Middle-school cross-country meets were the name of the game across Fairfax County Saturday morning (Oct. 19).

Hundreds of girls and boys runners in grades seven and eight participated in 3,000-meter races in different areas of the county.

Tight games have been the norm in recent years when the Liberty District rivals Langley Saxons and Yorktown Patriots met in high-school football action.

But not during the Friday (Oct. 18) regular-season clash. Host Langley won, 48-14, by taking control right from the start.

Led by the running of Ethan Lebkisher and a punishing ground game, the Marshall Statesmen won big in their latest high-school football game.

The Statesmen (6-2, 3-1) routed the visiting Wakefield Warriors (2-6, 0-4) by a 40-15 score in a Liberty District game Friday night (Oct. 18). Marshall is now tied for second place in the district with the Langley Saxons (7-1, 3-1).

Female competitors will take the spotlight for the remainder of the 2024 Virginia High School League golf season.

Beginning Monday (Oct. 21), players throughout Northern Virginia and across the commonwealth will participate in state-tournament qualifying events. The following Monday (Oct. 28), those who earned berths will play in the Girls State Open for all enrollment classifications combined at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

The first statewide Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division I private-school weekly high-school football poll for the 2024 season has been released, with no local teams ranked among the top six.

The Potomac School Panthers (4-2) and Flint Hill Huskies (1-5) received votes, but did not make the VISAA ranking.

It was a game described as “weird” by Oakton Cougars head coach Brian Clay. But he was happy to accept the result.

In a recent non-conference contest highlighted by multiple penalties and unusual situations, visiting Oakton (3-3) defeated the West Potomac Wolverines, 17-14, in overtime. Collin Henriques made the winning and walk-off 18-yard field goal.

They fell short of their ultimate goal, but the Robinson Rams still had another strong golf season.

The fall campaign ended when defending champion Robinson finished second in the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state team tournament, played Oct. 15 on a chilly and windy day on the par-72 Norman course at the Lansdowne Resort in Loudoun County.

In recording a repeat performance for the first time in decades, Owen Love won his second state championship.

The Edison Eagles sophomore golfer shot a 2-under-par round of 70, then won the individual title outright with a birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat Robinson Rams’ junior Raquel Walker (also with a 70) to defend his Virginia High School League Class 6 state golf tournament crown.

Their time without a state championship was short-lived for the Langley Saxons.

Motivated by last season’s disappointing third-place finish in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 6 state golf tournament, Langley returned to the throne by winning this year’s crown with a 303 team score. The defending champion Robinson Rams finished second this year with a 308 total.
