Showers and thunderstorms are expected, with a possible thunderstorm after 2pm and a high near 86. Winds will shift from south to east at about 6 mph in the afternoon, and an 80% chance of precipitation will bring rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, possibly more in thunderstorms. Wednesday night will see a low around 70, a northeast wind at 8 mph, and another 80% chance of precipitation with rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch. See more from Weather.gov.

JUST IN: Arrest made in Bailey’s Crossroads attempted sexual assault

A Chesterfield man has been arrested in connection with an attempted sexual assault in Bailey’s Crossroads over the weekend, police say.

Officers were dispatched to a small row of houses in the 3500 block of Carlin Springs Road around 5 a.m. on Saturday (Aug. 3) for a sexual assault, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Chantilly housing development advances after facing questions about wildlife, traffic impacts

A proposal to redevelop a mostly vacant office park in Chantilly with housing has cleared its first regulatory hurdle and could receive full approval by next month.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approve a request last month to rezone the property between Poplar Tree Road and Newbrook Drive from medium industrial to a residential district.

Local ice cream shop honors Olympic athletes with limited-time sundaes

With D.C.-area athletes riding high at this year’s Summer Games, Toby’s Homemade Ice Cream is serving up gold medal-themed scoops that probably taste sweeter than the real thing.

The Arlington and Vienna ice cream parlor unveiled a limited-time Gold Medal Sundae last Friday (Aug. 2) in honor of Arlingtonian swimmer Torri Huske, a Yorktown High School graduate who’s won five medals — three of them gold — at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Reston church donates school supplies to elementary students

Hundreds of students at Reston’s Forest Edge Elementary School will head to class later this month with brand-new backpacks, thanks to a donation drive organized by a local church.

Congregants brought 240 backpacks filled with school supplies to the Trinity Church Reston campus (1950 Isaac Newton Square West) on Sunday (Aug. 4), according to campus pastor Robbie Hall, who thanked the donors for their generosity during the church’s 10 a.m. service.

Park Authority seeks tenant to rehabilitate historic Tysons house

The clock is ticking on a chance to live in Tysons rent-free — if you’ll agree to restore and maintain the historic property.

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is accepting applications until Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. for a resident curator for Ash Grove, one of the county’s few still-standing houses from the 18th century.

Bonchon Chicken is plotting a comeback in Herndon and Annandale.

The Korean fried chicken chain plans to reopen its Herndon location under different owners, and it has secured a new space in Annandale within the same shopping center where the business saw its previous restaurant destroyed by a fire.

Fairfax County Public Schools ACE launches over 250 new training, certification programs for adult learners

Fairfax County Public Schools Adult and Community Education is launching more than 250 new courses for the trades, construction, IT and health care.

The new courses include in-person, hybrid and asynchronous offerings in line with the program’s focus on “new collar” workforce development, according to a school system news release. New collar defines high-paying professions that combine technical skills with specialized education rather than a four-year degree. Those roles are found in industries with high demand for workers in Northern Virginia — especially the trades, health care and technology — according to Paul Steiner, head administrator of FCPS Adult and Community Education, also known as ACE.

FCPS Details Cell Phone Storage Pilot — “Starting on the week of Sep. 2, students at certain middle schools will receive a Yondr pouch, which is magnetic and can only be unlocked at an unlocking station at the end of the day.” The schools participating in the pilot will be Frost, Irving, Luther Jackson, Poe, Robinson Thoreau and Twain. Route 1 Communities Struggle to Stay Cool — The Fairfax County Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination recently worked with several community groups to provide air-conditioning units to Harmony Place Trailer Park residents in Hybla Valley. However, the local nonprofit United Community has had to repeatedly close its food pantry “due a malfunctioning AC system.” [On the MoVe]

Korean BBQ Restaurant Coming to Fairfax City — “Chosun Hwaro Korean BBQ Restaurant is hoping to open its new location in the empty retail space in the Boulevard VI development within a month, a company spokesman told Patch on Monday.” Founding partners Sun Kim and Sung Kim started the business with a restaurant in Ellicott City, Maryland. Reston Community Center Offers Online Survey — Reston Community Center’s five-year strategic plan survey, which collects feedback on its facilities, programs and priorities, is now available online through Sept. 2. This year’s survey is particularly interested in what residents want to see from RCC’s Lake Anne facility. [RCC]

FCPD to Visit National Night Out Events — “This year, National Night Out is on Tuesday, August 6th. This is a chance for neighbors and law enforcement to come together and build lasting relationships through various community events like block parties, festivals, parades, and cookouts.” [FCPD]

Langley Student Medals in Geography Competition — “Ryan Minton, a rising sophomore at Langley High School, secured a top-12 finish at the 2024 International Geography Championships, held in Vienna, Austria. Volunteers Assemble School Bags for Students — “More than 75 volunteers put together 2,000 backpacks full of school supplies in less than two hours in a highly coordinated assembly line arrangement. The annual event, known as the Great Assembly, took place Aug. 3 at the Moose Lodge in Bailey’s Crossroads.” [Annandale Today]

Farmers’ Market Week Underway — “Join the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Farmers Markets as we proudly participate in National Farmers Market Week from Aug. 4 to 10.
