Woodrow Wilson Library in Bailey’s Crossroads will officially get renamed at the beginning of September following months of community requests.

The Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) Board of Trustees voted unanimously on July 10 to change the name to the Culmore Community Library to reflect the neighborhood where the library is located, replacing the former president’s moniker.

Northbound South George Mason Drive in Bailey’s Crossroads has been closed for over 12 hours due to a major water main break.

The Fairfax County Police Department reported the break near 7313 South George Mason Drive near Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) in the Skyline neighborhood at 9:39 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday). Water can be seen gushing up from under the street in a video shared by the department.

A Chesterfield man has been arrested in connection with an attempted sexual assault in Bailey’s Crossroads over the weekend, police say.

Officers were dispatched to a small row of houses in the 3500 block of Carlin Springs Road around 5 a.m. on Saturday (Aug. 3) for a sexual assault, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

A man accused of plotting a mass shooting at a Haymarket megachurch last year has been found competent to stand trial on federal hate crime charges.

U.S. District Judge Rossie Alston set an Oct. 21 trial date for Rui Jiang of Falls Church after holding a competency hearing Wednesday in federal court in Alexandria, the Associated Press reported.

Fairfax County police have made headway on a months-long investigation into over a dozen thefts targeting local liquor stores.

Detectives believe the crimes were all committed by the same “crew,” identifying a man arrested in Alexandria and three juvenile individuals as suspects, though others may also be involved, the Fairfax County Police Department said yesterday (Monday) in a news release.

The Fairfax County Public Library Board of Trustees is considering changing Woodrow Wilson Library’s name to Culmore Community Library following “significant community input.”

Library Board of Trustees Chair Brian Engler said many community members in the Mason District, where the library is located, have testified during public comment periods in recent months that they want the name changed.

Fairfax County is looking at Reston’s Lake Anne area and the Huntington Metro station as the next candidates for a program that offers tax breaks and other incentives to jumpstart revitalization efforts.

Fairfax County is moving ahead with plans to rename the Bailey’s Community Center (5920-A Summers Lane) in honor of a notable historical figure from the area’s Black community.

The Board of Supervisors, led by Mason District Supervisor Andrew Jimenez, approved a motion on May 21 to initiate the renaming process. A prominent figure in the historically Black Springdale community, Minnie Peyton founded five churches, including Warner Baptist and Holy Scripture Church of Christ.
