Going forward, Centre Ridge Elementary School will incorporate vegetables into the classroom as well as the cafeteria, thanks to a newly installed garden.

A “learning garden” from the nonprofit Captain Planet Foundation was unveiled at the Centreville school yesterday (Thursday). Built by a group of sixth-grade students and donated by Cox Enterprises, the conglomerate that owns the broadband company Cox Communications, the vegetable and herb garden will serve as an educational tool, while also providing access to produce.

Fairfax County police arrested a Centreville man over the weekend who is suspected of soliciting sex from an 11-year-old child.

The arrest became complicated when the man allegedly refused to leave his home, and officers learned that he may be armed, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release on Saturday (July 13).

The family of a Clifton woman who was killed last week while crossing Pickwick Road in Centreville has launched an online fundraiser.

Set up by the nephew of Lubia Marisol Vasquez Mateo, the Gofundme page says the family is seeking financial assistance to cover various expenses, including memorial costs, travel costs and the medical bills of her partner, Jose Vasquez, who was injured in the crash.

Officers responded to the intersection of Braddock and Pickwick roads around 9:50 p.m. after getting a call that two pedestrians had been hit by a driver, the Fairfax County Police Department reported in a press release published last night (Tuesday).

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on Route 28 in the Centreville area on Monday (June 17).

According to the VSP, Juan Rossi Jr., a 25-year-old from Centreville, was riding his 2017 Yamaha YZF on the Route 28 North exit ramp to I-66 East when he “lost control, ran off the road, and hit a guardrail.”

A Maryland man was arrested earlier this month for allegedly trying to carjack a vehicle that he claimed to be interested in buying, Fairfax County police say.

Officers were dispatched to the 14600 block of Seasons Drive in Centreville’s Bryarton neighborhood for the reported carjacking at 10:09 p.m. on June 5. According to the Fairfax County Police Department, a Rodney Hart Jr., 25, contacted two other men to express interest in buying a vehicle they’d listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

The price tag for the ongoing project to widen Route 29 just east of Centreville has dropped.

The project, which started construction over a year ago, will add two lanes to a 1.5-mile segment of the road between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive, expanding it from four lanes to six.
