Townhouse development on Bowman House tract in Reston wins final approval

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has approved a redevelopment plan that will result in 57 townhouses ringing the circa-1899 A. Smith Bowman House at 1850 Old Reston Avenue in Reston.

The 10-0 vote on July 14 allows the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association and developer EYA to move forward on the proposal, which replaces a pre-Covid plan for two new office buildings. The association, which owns the property, had intended to transform the 5.2-acre site into a new headquarters campus.

The transformation of Fannie Mae’s former office campus in Reston into a residential community is progressing rapidly.

Construction has been completed on the first townhouse building in Sunset Station, the new neighborhood at 11600 American Dream Way, developer Wheelock Communities announced this week, noting that residents have now moved into those eight units.

Proposed mixed-use development in McLean would include housing, new Keller Williams office

Another developer is circling older office buildings in downtown McLean as a prime spot for new housing.

The D.C.-based home builder Highcrest has proposed redeveloping the low-lying offices at 6816 and 6824 Elm Street with a single mixed-use building that could include 115 residential units as well as some retail and office space.

County exploring idea of combining Chantilly library with affordable housing

Fairfax County is inviting local residents to learn about a possible plan to combine a renovation of the Chantilly Regional Library and technical operations facility with affordable housing and community space.

The community meeting will be held July 16, from 6-7:30 p.m., at the Chantilly High School cafeteria (4201 Stringfellow Road) across from the library.

Herndon clears the way for Van Buren Office Park redevelopment

The Herndon Town Council has cleared the way for a redevelopment of the Van Buren Office Park.

The council voted unanimously last month (June 23) to approve a zoning map amendment allowing the office park at 250 Exchange Place to be converted from office and light-industrial uses to a mixed-use community with residential and commercial space.

Developer returns with plan for second residential building at Springfield Town Center

A Houston-based developer is proposing another apartment complex at Springfield Town Center, while leaving open the potential for a third building.

Hanover Company submitted an application to Fairfax County at the end of June seeking to amend a 2009 development plan for roughly 11 acres at the corner of Spring Mall and Frontier drives on the southeast corner of the property. The proposal could eventually bring 1,065 units to the area.

Mitre proposes consolidating planned Tysons offices, making room for housing

A currently precarious federal contracting landscape has one major company rethinking its office needs in Fairfax County.

The Mitre Corporation is seeking to revise a master plan approved eight years ago for its Tysons headquarters campus, consolidating unbuilt office space that was previously going to be spread across five new buildings into two high-rise towers. One existing building and three undeveloped lots would be replaced by multifamily housing.

UPDATED: Herndon office redevelopment advances after delay due to sidewalk concerns

Update — The Fairfax County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval at its July 8 meeting of the proposed Coppermine Commons III redevelopment after staff confirmed that the lingering transportation concerns have been resolved.

“Thank you to the applicant and to staff for getting this worked out. We really appreciate it,” Dranesville District Planning Commissioner Alyssa Batchelor-Causey said following the vote.

Planning commission praises ‘creative solution’ to expanding Seven Corners apartment complex

Plans for an apartment building with approximately 240 homes and ground-floor retail in the Seven Corners area have received support from the Fairfax County Planning Commission.

Commission members unanimously recommended on June 24 that the Board of Supervisors approve the proposal submitted by EYA and Southern Management.

Planning commission backs townhouses for Reston’s Isaac Newton Square

The Fairfax County Planning Commission voiced support last Wednesday (June 24) for the construction of 143 townhomes on the northern portion of Isaac Newton Square in Reston.

If approved by the Board of Supervisors, the project will represent the second phase of a larger plan greenlit in 2019 that calls for the 36-acre office park to be redeveloped with 2,100 residential units, plus new office, retail and potentially hotel space.
