The D.C. area’s annual summer restaurant showcase is set to kick off next week.

More than 30 Fairfax County restaurants will participate in the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington’s Summer Restaurant Week, which runs from Monday, Aug. 12 through Sunday, Aug. 18.

The food pantry run by South Lakes High School’s PTSA has collected 2 million pounds of food and toiletries to help local students and their families.

The parents, staff and other volunteers who operate the pantry achieved the milestone during their most recent distribution event held last Thursday (July 18) at the Reston school (11400 South Lakes Drive).

A Reston-based national food brand and multiple nonprofits are distributing thousands of pounds of food to combat food insecurity in Fairfax County and the broader Northern Virginia region.

Last week, the American canned seafood company StarKist, the D.C.-based nonprofit Feed the Children and Reston nonprofit Cornerstones announced they collected over 100,000 pounds of food during their third annual Summer Food Rally on June 6 in Sterling.

A new public art piece is coming to downtown Vienna this year.

Rustic Love, a Vienna-based nonprofit focused on food insecurity, is partnering with local artist Teresa L.C. Ahmad to create a mural on the Greenheart Juice building at 208 Dominion Road NE. Owned by Commonwealth Home Design, the building is across the street from the Washington & Old Dominion Trail and the Red Caboose.

A family-owned bakery from North Bethesda and a brand-new fitness studio are coming to one of the newest buildings in Tysons.

Heming developer Skanska announced today (Wednesday) that Sunday Morning Bakehouse and Apparati Wellness Studio will both open locations in the mixed-use apartment building at 1800 Chain Bridge Road.

The Washington Post is surveying its readers to find the best dive bar in the D.C. area, and the only Virginia establishment to make the final vote can be found in Fairfax County.

JV’s Restaurant in West Falls Church (6666 Arlington Blvd) is one of 12 finalists competing in the informal poll. Mostly located in D.C., the finalists rose to the top out of “dozens” of contenders submitted by “hundreds” of readers after the Post asked for favorite dive bars in March.

Two relative newcomers to Fairfax County’s dining scene have found favor with the Washington Post’s food critic.

Tom Sietsema, a critic for the newspaper since 2000, included The Maple Room in Vienna and Peter Chang in McLean on his round-up of the 26 best new restaurants in the D.C. area. The list was published yesterday (Wednesday) as part of a spring 2024 dining guide to celebrate “what’s new, but also what’s worth your time and money,” Sietsema wrote.

(Updated at 9:30 a.m. on 5/14/2024) McLean Day is about to take over Lewinsville Park (1659 Chain Bridge Road) once again with two days of music, food and carnival rides.

Now in its 109th year, the annual festival organized by the McLean Community Center will keep things fresh with the introduction of a beer and wine garden, a main stage relocation, additional attractions at the Friday night carnival and expanded voting for MCC’s governing board election.

Tysons Corner Center visitors will get another opportunity to sample the mall’s culinary scene this spring.

After drawing a big crowd when it launched last year, the Taste of Tysons is set to return for a second year on May 4. More than 40 eateries throughout the mall will participate, offering free food bites from noon to 2 p.m.

As showcased in yesterday’s 8-2 Opening Day loss in Cincinnati, Ohio, the post-World-Series-winning Washington Nationals remain a work in progress, but Dunkin’ Donuts hopes to drum up enthusiasm for this season nonetheless with a pep rally in Springfield on Monday (April 1).

The donut shop at 6310 Backlick Road will celebrate the D.C. team’s home opener with a giveaway of “DoNats Donuts” to its first 100 customers, starting at 9 a.m.
