The Madison Warhawks and Marshall Statesmen had opposite results in their final boys basketball games prior to participating in holiday tournaments later this week.

Madison (6-2) routed visiting Independence, 62-39, in a non-district high-school game for its fifth-straight win on Dec. 20, while host Marshall (6-3, 1-1) lost to the Yorktown Patriots (7-1), 59-57, in a seesaw Liberty District contest on the same night.

The third Senior Salute girls field-hockey tournament was held recently at Meridian High School in Falls Church.

The all-star event consisted of three games and included 48 of the top 6D and 6C North Region senior public-school players in Northern Virginia. Each player participated in two matches.

The annual girls and boys neighborhood varsity basketball doubleheader between the Madison Warhawks and Marshall Statesmen didn’t provide much suspense this year.

The host Warhawks swept the high-school games by comfortable margins the night of Dec. 13. In front of a large crowd, including loud-cheering student sections, the Madison girls won the opener in Vienna, 45-29, and the boys took the nightcap 55-43.

In the final stages of the fourth quarter, the Marshall Statesmen boys basketball team held a five-point lead and appeared poised to improve to 4-0.

Then the visiting Statesmen hit a couple of late-game bumps in the road, resulting in a 59-53 overtime road loss to the Lake Braddock Bruins (1-2), who won for the first time this high-school season.

Finally, the Lake Braddock Bruins won a close basketball game.

After opening their season with two- and three-point losses, the boys high-school team rallied to win a tight contest by defeating the visiting Marshall Statesmen, 59-53, in overtime in non-district action Dec. 10.

Runningbacks Robert Roncskevitz from the Langley Saxons, Ethan Lebkisher of the Marshall Statesmen and Ethan Buhler of the Herndon Hornets were chosen first-team all-Liberty District for their performances in football this fall.

Each was the leading rusher for his high-school team, helping all three earn 6D Northern Region playoff berths.

The Langley Saxons avenged one of their regular-season losses with a first-round victory in the region football-tournament playoffs, and will have the opportunity to do the same in the semifinals.

On Nov. 15, third-seeded and host Langley (9-2) downed the sixth-seed Marshall Statesmen (6-5), 42-14, after rallying from an early deficit in the 6D North Region high-school tourney.

Two girls volleyball players each from the Langley Saxons and Madison Warhawks were chosen first-team all-6D North Region for performances during the 2024 high-school season.

From Langley, junior setter Claire Mo was chosen first-team, as well as the region’s Player of the Year, and senior hitter Ana Toumazatos made the first team. The two helped Langley win the Liberty District tournament, then finish second in the region tourney to the Chantilly Chargers.

The Herndon Hornets and Marshall Statesmen are seeded in the lower half of the eight-team region-football playoff bracket — but shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Each high-school team proved formidable during the regular season, heading into the playoffs on a win streak (in Herndon’s case) and well-rested (in Marshall’s).

Sports

With a key victory Friday night (Oct. 25), the Herndon Hornets (7-2) significantly enhanced their chances to earn a region football playoff berth.

Herndon defeated the host Marshall Statesmen, 29-7, in a Liberty District high-school contest.
