Two Virginia State Police troopers saved a woman from potentially drowning last night (Sunday) after she crashed into a pond off of I-66.

Police and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units were dispatched to an eastbound I-66 ramp near Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) in Oakton around 9:40 p.m. yesterday for a vehicle sinking into a retention pond, per scanner traffic.

A Reston man has been arrested after allegedly stealing lottery tickets from several convenience stores around Fairfax County.

Detectives with the Fairfax County Police Department began investigating after officers were called to the 7-Eleven (2793 Chain Bridge Road) in Oakton for a report of a larceny and assault around 3:57 a.m. on Sept. 15, according to the police scanner.

Fairfax County police are investigating three different fatal pedestrian crashes that occurred over the past week.

Last Thursday (Sept. 19) around 9:38 p.m., Oscar Daniel Martinez Granados, 24, of Woodbridge was hit by a driver in the 8100 block of Old Keene Mill Road near Irving Middle School in Springfield, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

A woman was killed in a crash that occurred outside Oakton Shopping Center Saturday morning (Sept. 21).

Choon Kook, 80, from Vienna was hit by the driver of a Ford F-150 while walking at the intersection of Hunter Mill Road and Lynnhaven Place. She was transported to a hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, the Fairfax County Police Department reported in a tweet at 10:32 a.m.

The driver responsible for a crash that killed two Oakton High School students in 2022 will serve four years in prison, as recommended by a jury in April.

Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Randy Bellows finalized the sentence at a hearing on Friday (Sept. 6) afternoon and ordered that 20-year-old Fairfax resident Usman Shahid also get three years of supervised probation following his release, the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office announced.

McLean rower Claire Collins has made it to the final round of the women’s eight event at the Paris Olympics.

Collins and the rest of the American women’s eight team will compete for a medal on Saturday (Aug. 3) after they won a repechage or trial heat this morning (Thursday), racing against four other teams at the Nautical Stadium-Flatwater in France.

Updated at 9:30 a.m. on 7/26/2024The man found dead in Oakton last Saturday (July 20) has been identified as Nicacio Hernandez Gonzalez, 47, of Fairfax, police say.

The Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Friday) that a third man, 20-year-old Wilmer Adli Guzman, was arrested in D.C. on Wednesday (July 24) and charged with malicious wounding by mob in connection to Gonzalez’s killing.

When the 2024 Olympic Games begin in Paris, France, next week, there will be a few athletes competing to bring a medal back to their homes in Fairfax County.

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee announced on July 10 that 529 athletes have qualified to represent Team USA at the Olympics, including McLean rower Claire Collins, Clifton soccer player Griffin Yow, and diver Greg Duncan and fencer Hadley Husisian, who are both from Oakton.

A new condominium complex is under construction at MetroWest.

Crews have spent the past couple of weeks digging up a vacant lot in the middle of the Oakton development. Fencing and road blocks have been erected around the nearly 7.5-acre site, closing Royal Victoria Drive to traffic from Vaden Drive as well as footpaths used by residents to get to the Vienna Metro station to the north.
