The Town of Herndon is considering adding more than a dozen infrastructure and facility projects to its capital improvement plan (CIP).

Presented to the Herndon Planning Commission at a work session on Jan. 13, the proposed fiscal years 2026-2031 CIP features a total of 40 projects — 16 of them new — that would cost an estimated $268.6 million over the next five years, including more than $32.3 million for the upcoming fiscal year that will start on July 1.

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is once again encouraging residents to welcome a new year by hitting its trails.

The First Hike Fairfax photo contest will return for New Year’s Day 2025, offering prizes to park visitors who take a snap while strolling or hiking and upload it to the FCPA website. The link will be posted online by 7 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday).

The new year will bring some upgrades to the trails at Royal Lake Park.

With a two-year-long design and permitting process nearing completion, the Fairfax County Park Authority is accepting public comments through Jan. 27 on an environmental review of the planned trail-network improvements at the park in Kings Park West.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission gave its support last week to a mixed-use development dubbed McLean Crossing in Tysons.

The proposal for redeveloping the Commons of McLean apartments at 1640 Anderson Road will now be considered for final approval by the Board of Supervisors in the new year. Ultimately, as many as 5,000 people could call the property their home.

Great Falls Park has resolved to stop accepting cash as payment for its entry fees in the new year.

The National Park Service announced yesterday (Monday) that it will require visitors to the park at 9200 Old Dominion Drive to pay their entrance fees with a credit or debit card or by electronic means starting on Jan. 1, 2025.

Pickleball and tennis courts at two parks in the McLean area might be retired in the future.

The Fairfax County Park Authority is considering relocating two shared-use courts at Linway Terrace Park (6246 Linway Terrace) in McLean. Westgate Park (7508 Magarity Road) in Tysons also has two courts — one dedicated to tennis and one for both tennis and pickleball — slated for removal.

McLean Central Park has reopened to the public following a major revitalization project nearly two years in the making.

The upgrades include modernized playgrounds, a new pavilion, improved walkways and enhanced green spaces. While the Fairfax County Parking Authority is still finalizing a new donor wall, a grand reopening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. this Saturday (Dec. 7).

Fairfax City is stepping up surveillance of its historic downtown and two public parks with the help of private security guards.

Starting today (Monday), uniformed but unarmed guards will patrol the Old Town commercial district, Stafford Drive Park (3300 Stafford Drive) and Draper Drive Park (9797 Beech Drive) as part of an eight-week security pilot program developed by the City of Fairfax Police Department.

New interpretative signs are headed to Riverbend Park in Great Falls and Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Chantilly next month as part of an initiative to promote poetry in Fairfax County’s park system.

Set to be unveiled next Friday, Nov. 1, the signs will showcase poems selected by outgoing Fairfax County Poet Laureate Danielle Badra for both of the locations.

Reston’s Hunters Woods ballfield was officially rededicated as a park on Friday (Oct. 4).

Reston Association marked the underutilized baseball diamond’s transformation into a community park with staff, residents and county officials. The association completed the project in November 2023.
