The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors took less than 10 minutes on Tuesday (Feb. 4) to approve land-use changes allowing for a continuing-care facility along Route 7 in the Reston/Great Falls area.

The proposal by Silverstone Senior Living calls for up to 130 units — a mix of independent-living and assisted-living options — on the 22.5-acre parcel at 10819 Leesburg Pike, across from Riva Ridge Road and west of Baron Cameron Avenue.

A search for an operator to run an independent living facility planned for Reston Station’s upcoming Midline district has apparently come up empty so far.

With demolition of the vacant office building currently on the site at 1831 Wiehle Avenue expected to begin this year, developer Comstock Companies is exploring the possibility of delivering age-restricted housing for seniors instead, according to an application submitted to Fairfax County last Thursday (Jan. 23).

Tysons is getting a community center, one that will exclusively serve residents 50 and older.

Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) has put out a call for public input on the programming that should be offered at the center, which has been named the Arbor Row Center and will be located on the ground floor of The Mather at 7929 Westpark Drive.

Older adults looking for a more affordable place to live in Fairfax County will have the opportunity to get in line for an apartment next week.

The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) will accept waitlist applications for its affordable housing properties reserved for seniors from 8 a.m. on Monday (Jan. 13) through Sunday, Jan. 19 at 11:59 p.m.

One of Reston Association’s most popular programs is coming back later this month.

The Senior Movie Day program will kick off its 30th year on Jan. 22 with a screening of the Annette Bening-starring biopic “Nyad” at Look Dine-In Cinemas (11940 Market Street) in Reston Town Center.

A plan to build 24 cottage-style independent living units on The Virginian compound along Arlington Blvd in Mantua have taken a key step forward.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission voted unanimously on Dec. 11 to recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve the new facilities at 9229 Arlington Blvd on the south side of Route 50 between Blake Lane and Nutley Street, just east of Fairfax City.

At least one gunshot was reportedly fired at apartments in Tysons Towers, a senior living community off of Gosnell Road near the Greensboro Metro station.

Police officers responded to the 8500 block of Tyspring Street in Tysons at 7:58 p.m. last Friday (Nov. 22) after receiving a call for a “missile” fired into an occupied dwelling, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

More residents are starting to move into The Mather Tysons with the recent completion of a second building.

The senior living community at 7929 Westpark Drive opened its 18-story south building in early September, adding another 114 independent living apartments to the 179 units delivered with the initial north building in March.
