A local developer is seeking to install a drive-thru option for a new bank in Springfield.

Property owner Federal Realty has applied for a special exception from Fairfax County to construct an “ATM only drive through” at 6331 Backlick Road, the site of a forthcoming Chase Bank in the Tower Shopping Center.

A pedestrian has died in the wake of a crash that occurred last month on Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield.

Marcos Ramirez, 53, was crossing Old Keene Mill Road at Hanover Avenue around 8 p.m. on Nov. 16 when the westbound driver of a 2011 Honda Accord struck him, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

Discount grocery retailer Aldi plans to open its newest Fairfax County supermarket later this year.

The forthcoming grocery store will officially open its doors at 6230 Rolling Road in the West Springfield Shopping Mall on Thursday, Dec. 4, Aldi announced on Nov. 19.

A new art installation has been unveiled at Springfield Town Center.

The gallery wall, which opened last week through a collaboration between the mall and ArtsFairfax, features seven works from a handful of local artists.


Countywide

Hundreds of Fairfax County residents are expected to hit the streets tomorrow (Saturday) as part of a nationwide protest movement opposing the Trump administration.

Though the main event will take place at noon near the National Mall in D.C., a dozen rallies are also planned across the county for this year’s second “No Kings Day of Action,” many of them organized by local chapters of the grassroots, liberal activist network Indivisible.

A key regional planning body voted today (Wednesday) to defer until at least 2026 any further consideration of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s plan to extend express lanes on the south side of the Capital Beltway (I-495) across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and into Maryland.

“The project is simply not ready,” said Eric Olson, a member of the Prince George’s County Council who sits on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Transportation Planning Board (TPB).

Fairfax County is losing Taste of NoVA to Prince William County, a consequence of the federal government shutdown stretching into a second week.

The food festival was set to unfold this weekend (Oct. 11-12) at the National Museum of the U.S. Army in Fort Belvoir, which has been closed since Oct. 1 with all events canceled as long as the shutdown continues.

Fairfax County is revisiting its vision for downtown Springfield in the hopes of adapting it to a new era.

The county’s Department of Planning and Development will formally kick off its Franconia-Springfield Planning Study with a virtual community meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. Interested members of the public must register to receive a link to the Zoom meeting.

Fairfax County officials will open new, expanded public health facilities next week in an underserved area.

“There is just so much for us to be thankful for. It’s a beautiful space for our clients and staff,” county health director Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu said during a Sept. 26 sneak preview of the Franconia-Springfield Public Health Center.
