The long-awaited trial for a Herndon man accused of orchestrating the killings of his wife and another man has been postponed once again.

Brendan Banfield’s trial is now scheduled to begin Jan. 13, with Fairfax Circuit Court Chief Judge Penney S. Azcarate granting a continuance in court yesterday (Wednesday). The trial had been been scheduled to start Oct. 20 (Monday), having been previously continued earlier this year.

Fairfax County police are now turning to the public for help with identifying a suspect in a stabbing that occurred late last month at the Build America Plaza retail center in Bailey’s Crossroads.

Officers responded to the 3800 block of South George Mason Drive at 6:03 a.m. on June 29 after a man called 911, reporting that he had been stabbed twice, according to scanner traffic.

Update 12 p.m. Police said the alleged assailant, a 15-year-old, has been arrested and will be charged with malicious wounding. The 16-year-old who was stabbed has had their condition downgraded to stable. Both teens were students at the school.

While Fairfax County Public Schools are testing out metal detectors at schools, Superintendent Michelle Reid confirmed that West Potomac High School did not have metal detectors in place.

Former Army soldier Stephan Smerk was given the maximum sentence — 70 years in prison — today (Friday) for the murder of West Springfield woman Robin Lawrence in 1994.

Smerk, 53, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Oct. 4 for stabbing and killing Lawrence in her home in an act of random violence.

A 16-year-old boy has been identified as the alleged perpetrator in the stabbing of a police officer in Fair Lakes yesterday (Monday).

The unnamed juvenile appeared to have charged at an officer responding to the scene in the 12800 block of Fair Lakes Parkway before attempting to strike him with a knife, according to footage released today (Tuesday) from police body and in-car cameras.

A grand jury indicted Brendan Banfield, 39, on one count of felony child abuse and neglect and one count of felony child cruelty for his actions on Feb. 24, 2023, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano announced today (Monday).
