Updated at 2 p.m. — Jose Hernandez Mejia was arrested this morning in South Carolina for allegedly stabbing his wife, Evelin Molina, Fairfax County police said.
Earlier: Fairfax County police are searching for a man wanted in a fatal stabbing in Springfield over the weekend.
Jose Hernandez Mejia asked a family member yesterday (Sunday) to come to his home in the 5200 block of Rolling Road and explained to them that he had just stabbed his wife inside, police spokesman Lt. Dan Spital said at a press conference. He then handed over some personal belongings to family members and left the scene.
He left in a 2016 black Honda HRV with Virginia tags, TXV-1986, Spital said. Officers arrived at the scene, entered the home and located a dead woman with upper body trauma consistent with stab wounds, he said. A knife was located nearby with what appeared to be blood on it.
Police issued a warrant for Hernandez Mejia, stating he’s wanted for second-degree murder. Spital said they’ve been in communication with him and thought he was going to turn himself in. He still had not turned himself in as of this morning (Monday).
The department asks anyone who sees him or his vehicle to call 9-1-1 immediately.
While police believe the stabbing was isolated to the family and home, and that there isn’t an immediate threat, they say the public should use caution if they see Hernandez Mejia, and consider him armed and dangerous.
“We are actively looking for him, we are asking for the community’s help,” police said.
Spital said there were minimal previous calls for service at the home, and none of them were domestic-related.
Hernandez Mejia and his wife have children but they are safe, Spital said.
“A tragic situation, these domestic-related homicides are awful and we are doing everything that we can to help families that are in crisis,” Spital said.
A woman stabbed a man after a dispute at a business in Springfield yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, Fairfax County Police Department said.
The man and the 35-year-old woman got into an argument before she stabbed him and left, police said. A community member found the man in the parking lot with a stab wound to the upper body.
Officers responded to the 6800 block of Commerce Street for the stabbing around 4:34 p.m., police said.
The man was treated for injuries that were later determined not to be life threatening, police told FFXnow.
Detectives obtained a warrant for malicious wounding.

An argument ended in three men getting stabbed behind the North County Human Services Center in Reston last night (Sunday), Fairfax County police say.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, three men “were engaged in a verbal argument that escalated to a physical assault” around 11:33 p.m. at 1850 Cameron Glen Drive.
“During the assault, a knife was produced, and the three men all received stab wounds,” the FCPD said. “The men were all transported to local hospitals with injuries that were considered non-life threatening.”
The incident reportedly occurred at a basketball court behind the building, which houses an adult day care drop-in center, an office for the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, and other health and social services.
Adjacent to Inova’s Reston/Herndon emergency room, the North County building hosts a hypothermia shelter run by the nonprofit Cornerstones during the winter, but that program ended for the year after March 31.
“Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this event,” the FCPD said.

A man was hospitalized with potentially life-threatening injuries from a stabbing in Annandale last night (Wednesday).
According to Fairfax County police, the stabbing occurred near the intersection of Wadsworth Court and Little River Turnpike.
Lt. James Curry, a Fairfax County Police Department spokesman, says the call came in around 9:15 p.m. The male victim was rushed to the hospital where he was last reported in critical condition, Curry added.
According to police, the suspect was described as an Hispanic man wearing a blue coat and black pants. The investigation, including of the circumstances and possible motive, is in its preliminary stages. Curry advises anybody with details about the incident to call police.
Wadsworth Court was also the site of a reported shooting on Monday night (April 4). In that incident, a man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and police said the suspect left the area in a car.

Fairfax County police officers arrested and charged a 21-year-old Falls Church man after two men were stabbed just before 2 p.m. yesterday (Thursday).
Police were called to Seven Corners at Arlington Boulevard and Patrick Henry Drive for an assault and determined a man was involved in two separate assaults that escalated when he stabbed both men, police said.
“Officers found the suspect nearby and took him into custody without incident,” a department spokesperson said in an email.
The two men and the suspect were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Alex Ostorga was arrested and charged with two counts of malicious wounding.
A George Mason University professor was stabbed to death in his Oakton home near Vienna Wednesday night, Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a press conference today (Thursday).
Michael Buschmann, 59, was found dead in the house in the 9800 block of Palace Green Way after police received several calls reporting his 26-year-old son Axel Buschmann walking around shirtless, covered in blood, and holding a knife.
Police spoke with Axel and de-escalated the situation in what the chief called one of the best examples of how to handle such a situation.
“He was armed with a knife and one of the veteran police officers was talking to him the whole time and he eventually dropped the knife and we were able to safely bring him into custody,” Davis said, referring to body camera footage. “They did an unbelievably great job deescalating…It was textbook because that could have had a tragic ending as well.”
Based on statements that Axel made to police, officers went to the home and discovered his father unresponsive.
Axel also had a stab wound to his torso that he is still being treated for at a hospital, police said. He is being charged with second-degree murder, Davis said.
Buschmann was chair of George Mason’s Department of Bioengineering and Nanomedicine, Davis said. He hails from Montreal and went to MIT with degrees in medical engineering and medical physics. His research led him to launch four biotech companies.
GMU Vice President and Chief Brand Officer Paul Allvin said Michael was recruited to the college in 2017 and recently was working on technology that would make mRNA vaccines less costly.
“We are crushed and anguished by this tragic news,” he said, adding that Michael’s acquaintances described him as “relentlessly inquisitive.”
He said the university is focused on how to help those who knew him and asks the community for its support.
“In time we will have more to say about how we will as a community mourn his death and celebrate his life and reflect upon his contributions,” he said.
Davis said he is having trouble wrapping his mind around the number of homicides committed by adult children on parents or family members.
Reporting an increase in homicides in 2021, Fairfax County police cited an unusually high number of adult children killing parents and other family members. Since 2021, police say six people have been killed by their sons. Another homicide involved a sister being charged with killing her brother.
“Adult son on parent homicides — that’s what’s driving our homicides,” Davis said. “That’s something that continues to plague the community.”
He’s previously spoken on how despair and isolation stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic has affected family dynamics, though he said he doesn’t know to what extent that played a role in this homicide.
But he said the department is focused on figuring out the “why” behind the pattern and seeing what can be done to address ongoing family disputes before they turn deadly.
“The approach we have to take as a society is are we doing enough with intervention and mental health,” he said.
He said the county is committed to increasing the number of crisis intervention trained officers.
“I know the Board of Supervisors is on the verge of making a budgetary commitment to us so we can add several more crisis intervention trained officers to our co-responder program,” he said.

Fairfax County police are investigating a fatal stabbing Wednesday after a suspected domestic situation was reported in Oakton around 5:30 p.m.
Sgt. Jason Chandler, police spokesman, says one man is in custody and the other was pronounced dead at the scene, a residence in the 9800 block of Palace Green Way.
Chandler said this is “a very active investigation” and police are still trying to determine the relationship between the two men. He added that this was not a random act and there is no threat to the public.

(Updated at 12 p.m.) Police are investigating a stabbing after a man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Fairfax County Police Department spokesperson Tara Gerhard said the man was attacked outside last night in Annandale. The call came in around 10:08 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday), and police responded to the area of Daniels Avenue and Mangalore Drive.
The victim was taken to the hospital where he’s recovering. He reported being robbed.
“As always, we ask the public to remain vigilant of their surroundings and to report any suspicious persons and activities,” Sgt. Jason Chandler said in a statement.
Gerhard said police were canvassing for surveillance footage last night.

One man was stabbed and two others were injured after a pickup truck crashed into an apartment in Annandale Saturday night.
The incident happened around 7:20 p.m. on the 4500 block of Commons Drive and reportedly involved a gathering of about 60 people.
After the stabbing, the suspect drove his pickup into a sliding glass door injuring the two other men. Amazingly, Sgt. Ian Yost, Fairfax County police spokesman, says all of those injured had non-life threatening injuries. He said the three men who were injured were all adults.
Sgt. Yost says the suspect was taken into custody and is known to the victims. Detectives are still trying to sort out the details and he anticipates additional details to shortly.
