Capital Bikeshare expanding to Mason District, Mount Vernon Trail

Fairfax County will add another 27 stations to its Capital Bikeshare network in the coming weeks, the largest expansion since the county joined the program in 2016.

Starting in early May, the installations will include 16 stations in Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads and Seven Corners, bringing Capital Bikeshare to the Mason and Braddock districts for the first time.

The remaining 11 stations will widen the rental bicycle system’s presence in southern Fairfax County, with additional locations in Huntington and Belle Haven and along the Mount Vernon Trail.

“Work at each site is expected to be completed in a single day, weather permitting,” the Fairfax County Department of Transportation said in a press release. “Once a station is installed and powered, it will be stocked with bicycles and opened to the public shortly afterward.”

FCDOT first shared that Capital Bikeshare was planning to enter the Annandale area back in 2024, when staff solicited community feedback on the proposed locations. The expansion was funded by federal grant money that also enabled the county to acquire about 140 electric bikes.

Mason District Supervisor Andres Jimenez emphasized in a statement to FFXnow at the time that it was important for the expansion to be handled “in an equitable way,” noting that $5 annual memberships are available to residents enrolled in certain federal and state assistance programs.

The memberships include unlimited 60-minute classic bike rides, discounted e-bike rates, and a $40 monthly credit to help cover ride rates and out-of-station parking charges for e-bikes.

“By expanding Capital Bikeshare into more neighborhoods and communities of opportunity, we’re making it easier for people to connect to transit, jobs, schools, services and recreation without relying on a car,” Jimenez said in the FCDOT press release. “This expansion supports our goals for equity, sustainability and safer, more accessible travel options for everyone.”

Capital Bikeshare started rolling out to the Mount Vernon District last year, with four stations near the Huntington Metro station. Those locations and the ones being added this month are all funded by a grant from the Transportation Alternatives program established by the Biden administration’s 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Once the expansion is complete, Fairfax County will host more than 100 Capital Bikeshare stations, including at least one serving all 13 Metrorail stops. More than 40,000 trips were taken within the county last year, according to FCDOT.

Even more stations are already in the works along the I-66 corridor from Dunn Loring to Centreville and in the Town of Vienna.
