Great Falls Man Allegedly Conspired with Iran — “A former Federal Aviation Administrator has been indicted for allegedly acting as an agent of the Iranian government in the U.S. and conspiring to do so…Between at least December 2017 and June 2024, Rahmati reportedly conspired with and acted on the behalf of Iranian government officials and intelligence operatives, according to an indictment.” [WUSA9]

Woman Charged for Tysons Robbery — A 27-year-old woman was arrested in Pennsylvania last Thursday (Sept. 26) in connection to the June 25 robbery of Chanel at Tysons Galleria. Released on bond pending a future court date, the woman is the third person to be charged in the case, but police are still looking for four other people believed to have been involved. [FCPD]

Reston Association members could see an increase in member fees next year.

The association’s staff have proposed a draft budget that includes a $865 yearly assessment — a 5.9% increase that would help cover salary increases and a $103 contribution per member to RA’s capital improvements plan.


Pan Am Shopping Center in Merrifield is getting a new name to go with its modernizing look.

The 228,000-square-foot, Safeway-anchored shopping center will now be called Providence Place, a nod to its location within Fairfax County’s Providence District, Federal Realty Investment Trust, the property owner, announced today (Monday).


Fairfax County police have determined that a threat on social media involving a potential shooting at Glasgow Middle School was unfounded, the latest in a growing trend that has families, schools and law enforcement nationwide on edge.

Glasgow administrators first alerted parents via text around 8:45 a.m. that a social media threat was being shared around the school, prompting them to call the police and other agencies for an investigation.


Reston Association is lowering the water levels of its lakes, starting today (Monday).

Dam repair and inspection firm Bander Smith will perform annual spillway inspections at Newport, Thoreau and Audubon lakes, requiring them to be drained by up to 8 inches. Lake Anne will be drained by 2 feet to also allow for minor concrete repairs to its riser tower.


A government contractor that provides “AI-infused software and insights” has crossed the border from Loudoun to Fairfax County.

Unison opened its new headquarters at the Westpark Corporate Center in Tysons with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday (Sept. 24). Previously based in Sterling, the company says it spent a year building out the new space at 8444 Westpark Drive, Suite 920.

Man Hospitalized After Crash in McLean — A driver was taken to a hospital “in life-threatening condition” after a single-vehicle crash at Old Dominion Drive and Kirby Road in McLean on Saturday (Sept. 28). An investigation into the crash is ongoing. [FCPD/Twitter]

Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run Identified — A preliminary investigation into the fatal hit-and-run crash last Thursday (Sept. 26) indicated that “James Matthew Martin, 57, was crossing Richmond Highway from east to west outside the crosswalk when he was struck by the driver.” Detectives have also identified the driver and “continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and potential charges.” [FCPD]

Herndon Man in Murder Case Denied Bond — “Brendan Banfield was denied bond on Friday after being indicted earlier this month for the murders of his wife, Christine Banfield, and another man, Joseph Ryan, at the couple’s Fairfax County home…The defense argued that Banfield is not a flight risk and needs to care for his child.” [FOX5]

Dranesville School Sees Decline in Absenteeism — Chronic absenteeism at Dranesville Elementary School has dropped from over 20% during the 2022-2023 school year to 7% last year, thanks to “a renewed focus on connecting with every student.” Principal Jamie Gadley says students have started to hold themselves accountable. The McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) still will need to raise the bulk of funds necessary to make its planned second facility in McLean a reality, but the arts group now will benefit from $500,000 in Fairfax County government funding.

The Board of Supervisors won Sept. 24 unanimously supported providing those funds from the county’s Economic Opportunity Reserve.


Fourth- and-fifth-grade students at Haycock Elementary School made the initial request, and on Sept. 21 community leaders gathered to unveil the second in what is expected to be a growing number of markers in the Fairfax County government’s Black/African-American Historical Marker Project.

The new marker is located at Clemyjontri Park in McLean, just steps from Gunnell’s Chapel, and notes the provenance of the historic chapel, located on land deeded by Robert Gunnell in 1879.


In anticipation of a drainage project in the 300 block of Glyndon Street, N.E., the Vienna Town Council unanimously agreed Sept. 23 to fix a long-standing right-of-way quirk along the street’s Glyndon Park frontage between Ayr Hill Avenue and Jean Place, N.E.

The right-of-way issue dates back to the original 1891 plan for the Ayr Hill subdivision, said Deputy Planning and Zoning Director Kelly O’Brien.
