A person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the Capital Beltway (I-495) near North Springfield Elementary School during the afternoon rush hour today (Monday).

The crash involving a Toyota Tacoma truck, a Scion XB hatchback, a Honda Civic, a Ford F350 and a Nissan Rogue occurred around 3:08 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-495 near Braddock Road in north Springfield, according to the Virginia State Police.

Police are still searching for a driver who allegedly shot another man on I-495 last month in an apparent act of road rage.

Around 9:12 a.m. on June 11, the victim was driving south on I-495 in a brown 1999 Chevy Suburban SUV near Duke Street in Alexandria when they might’ve cut off the driver of a black BMW sedan, according to the Virginia State Police.

Three people have been arrested and charged with allegedly stealing thousands of dollars in candles from businesses at shopping centers in Kingstowne, Greenbriar and Springfield.

The Fairfax County Police Department says the “organized crew” of D.C. residents was behind 16 different thefts that occurred in February through May. The value of the candles stolen in each case ranged from $600 to over $4,300.

A high-speed chase on the Capital Beltway (I-495) this morning started with a driver getting pulled over for using their cell phone, police say.

After allegedly seeing a violation of Virginia’s “hands-free” law banning the use of cell phones while driving, a trooper attempted a traffic stop on northbound I-495 near Braddock Road in the North Springfield area around 8:54 a.m. today (Wednesday), according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).

A Springfield man will serve more than three decades in prison for his reported efforts to collect and send funds to the Islamic State group.

Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, 35, was sentenced to 30 years and four months in prison yesterday (Wednesday) by a U.S. District Court judge in Alexandria after a jury convicted him in December on multiple charges of providing material support to a terrorist organization.

A recent briefing from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) did little to quell questions and concerns from regional leaders about a proposal to extend the I-495 Express Lanes from Springfield into Prince George’s County, Maryland.

The Southside Express Lanes project is a “complex and lengthy” undertaking, VDOT Northern Virginia District Megaprojects Director Michelle Shropshire told the D.C. region’s Transportation Planning Board (TPB) at a meeting yesterday (Tuesday).

The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking feedback for a study assessing potential operational transit and bicycle/pedestrian improvements on Franconia Road near the interchange with I-395, I-95 and nearby Commerce Street.
