The Langley Saxons (9-3) improved to 3-0 in the Liberty District with a difficult road victory over the Yorktown Patriots in a Jan. 10 girls basketball game.

Langley led throughout the high-school game, but couldn’t pull away from Yorktown. The Saxons led 7-2 after the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime.

Two local players who graduated from Fairfax County schools continue as big contributors for the success of the Gettysburg College women’s basketball team this season.

Both are starting junior guards: Alayna Arnolie a graduate of Madison High School and A.B. Holsinger is a Langley High grad. The two have helped the Bullets to an 11-1 overall record through Jan. 7 action.

During his high-school football career for the Langley Saxons, Tre Vasiliadis gained more than 4,000 all-purpose yards over four years.

In college, Vasiliadis came oh so close to  that 4,000-yard all-purpose milestone, as well.

On a turnaround 12-foot jump shot in the middle of the lane, Anya Rahman scored her 1,000th career point for the Langley Saxons girls basketball team in a recent high-school game.

The basket came with 2:39 left in the second quarter against the Bishop O’Connell Knights on Langley’s home court, giving the Saxons a 20-9 lead.

A few matches into the Northern Virginia Scholastic Ice Hockey League, the Herndon/South Lakes club team leads the Adams Division with a 4-0 record, with the multiple-time defending champion Langley Saxons at 4-1 with a four-match winning streak.

Also in the division, the Madison Warhawks are 2-2, the Oakton Cougars 2-3 and the McLean/Chantilly high-school squad 1-3. Langley and Herndon/South Lakes meet later in the season.

The Langley Saxons and Potomac School Panthers had recent mixed results against opponents that were top teams in girls state basketball tournaments last season.

Langley (2-1) defeated the visiting Woodgrove Wolverines (0-1) of Purcellville, 59-54, as Anya Rahman scored 31 points with two steals.

As the 2024-25 high-school swimming and diving season begins, the Langley Saxons have an impressive championship streak in the works.

The boys team has won five straight significant postseason titles, including Liberty District, 6D North Region and Class 6 state crowns last winter. The season before, Langley won region and state crowns, after a second-place finish in the district.

It’s been a few days since the Langley Saxons won a second straight and fourth overall state girls volleyball championship. But the team’s head coach already is looking ahead to what might be possible next season.

That’s what coaches do, when they are in charge of high-school programs that have enjoyed the sustained success the Saxons have.

For the last two seasons, Cole Samburg and Robert Roncskevitz became familiar names on the Langley Saxons football team.

The offensive-backfield-mates each amassed significant offensive statistics during two years of starting action for their high-school team, junior Samburg as the quarterback and senior Roncskevitz as runningback.
