A teen was shot after being tackled by a Virginia State Police trooper during a pursuit in the Kings Park West neighborhood early this morning (Tuesday).

The trooper encountered the 16-year-old boy while investigating a vehicle that had reportedly fled from a Fairfax City police traffic stop near Burke Station Road and Main Street at around 12:43 a.m., according to VSP spokesperson Matthew Demlein.

A Fairfax County police officer will not face criminal charges for shooting and killing a Reston woman after she struck him with a knife and cornered him in a dead-end hallway last September.

After telling Sydney Wilson numerous times to “back up” while she pursued him with a knife, Police Officer First Class (PFC) Peter Liu fired five gunshots in her direction — an adequate response on Liu’s part, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano said yesterday (Tuesday).

The Fairfax County Police Department has implemented a formal policy for handling foot pursuits.

The department released guidelines on foot pursuits last week that it says will ensure officers utilize “leading-industry best practices” when handling “unpredictable events.” The new policy officially takes effect today (Wednesday).

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano slammed Gov. Glenn Youngkin today (Monday), accusing the Republican executive of commuting a former police officer’s prison sentence without regard for “the law or the facts.”

The governor’s office announced late Sunday that Youngkin had commuted the sentence of former Sgt. Wesley Shifflett only two days after it was handed down by Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Randy I. Bellows.

A former Fairfax County police officer who shot and killed a man in Tysons had his prison sentence commuted tonight (Sunday) by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

Former Sgt. Wesley Shifflett was sentenced to serve three years in state prison on Friday (Feb. 28) after being convicted of recklessly handling a firearm.

Almost seven years after his death, federal officials have determined that the two U.S. Park Police officers who pursued and shot McLean resident Bijan Ghaisar complied with department policies.

The report released yesterday (Tuesday) concludes officers Alejandro Amaya and Lucas Vinyard were reasonable in their belief that Ghaisar “presented a clear and immediate threat to public safety” when he fled after being rear-ended by a rideshare driver on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Alexandria on Nov. 17, 2017.

Fairfax County police released body camera footage yesterday (Monday) of the Sept. 16 shooting of a 33-year-old woman during a welfare check in Reston.

An officer trained in crisis intervention fatally shot and killed Sydney Wilson, a Reston resident, after Wilson injured the officer with a knife, the video shows, corroborating the Fairfax County Police Department’s previous description of the encounter.
