Window washers rescued after basket on Tysons high-rise collapses

Two window washers in Tysons were rescued this morning (Thursday) after the crane carrying their basket malfunctioned, leaving them dangling off a 22-story building.

Fairfax County’s Fire and Rescue Department responded to Tysons Tower (7900 Tysons One Place) around 9:20 a.m. after receiving numerous reports of the partial collapse, which saw one end of the basket drop — placing it at an unrecoverable angle.

New ice skating rink opening today at Tysons’ Capital One Center

Ice-skating season at Tysons’ Capital One Center begins today (Thursday).

Skaters can take to a new, 9,000-square-foot ice skating rink at the development starting at noon, Capital One Center announced.

Vienna Police search for stolen vehicle used in grocery store theft

The Vienna Police Department is searching for a vehicle used in the theft of approximately $1,000 in products from a local grocery store.

A white Honda Pilot SUV that officers learned had been stolen was used as a getaway vehicle by two men who reportedly shoplifted the groceries on Monday (Dec. 1), police said.

Congress could rename Fairfax City post office for late Rep. Gerry Connolly

A Fairfax City post office could be renamed in honor of the late Rep. Gerry Connolly under bills introduced this week in Congress.

The legislation, championed by Rep. James Walkinshaw in the House and Virginia Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine in the Senate, would formally designate the post office at 10660 Page Avenue as the “Congressman Gerald E. ‘Gerry’ Connolly Post Office Building.”

Police: Fairfax man charged for showing knife, threatening restaurant staff

Fairfax City police have formally announced the arrest of a man accused of brandishing a knife at a local restaurant yesterday (Monday).

Hadi Abboud, a 23-year-old Fairfax resident, was taken into custody around 12:30 p.m., shortly after police responded to the Saba Yemeni Restaurant at 3900 Pickett Road.

Developer hopes to install drive-thru ATM at new Springfield bank

A local developer is seeking to install a drive-thru option for a new bank in Springfield.

Property owner Federal Realty has applied for a special exception from Fairfax County to construct an “ATM only drive through” at 6331 Backlick Road, the site of a forthcoming Chase Bank in the Tower Shopping Center.

A man who allegedly claimed to have a bomb before boarding a bus in Woodlawn over the weekend has been arrested.

Blake Davis Norton, 57, boarded a Fairfax Connector bus in Woodlawn yesterday (Sunday) after telling the bus’s driver that he had a bomb in his backpack, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release today.

A familiar face at farmers’ markets across Fairfax County has now set up a permanent shop in Reston.

Empanadas de Mendoza is currently in soft opening mode at North Point Village Center, but the doors of its second storefront will officially open on Dec. 6, co-owner Gabi Steelman told FFXnow.
