Two Fairfax County community-theater organizations garnered a total of 34 nominations in the annual Washington Area Theatre Community Honors (WATCH) awards program.

Reston Community Players received 25 nominations, tying with Prince William Little Theatre for the most of any troupe, and Providence Players of Fairfax received nine.


Fairfax City is in the running to be ranked among the nation’s best small town arts scenes.

USA Today’s panel of independent editors nominated Fairfax for Best Small Town Arts Scene in its 10Best awards. There are 20 communities across the U.S. nominated in the category, including Abingdon in Southwest Virginia.

One of America’s largest backyard furniture retailers has announced plans to open a store in Springfield.

Fortunoff Backyard Store has secured an 11,000-square-foot space in Springfield Commons (6721-B Frontier Drive), which is expected to open later this spring, the company announced.


Despite cold temperatures and a looming storm, plenty of families stopped by the Reston Town Center pavilion on Saturday (Jan. 24) to enjoy a variety of winter activities.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the town center’s second annual “Ice-travaganza” brought live music, free hot chocolate, ice skating and ice sculptures that were soon buried under as many as eight inches of snow by Winter Storm Fern, which passed through the area a day later.

    An already busy Centreville shopping center flanked by H Mart, Spa World and various eateries was even more crowded than usual when the Japanese department store Teso Life opened last Friday (Jan. 16).

    The chain carries a variety of Japanese and other Asian home goods, food, personal care items and more. Its new location in the Old Centreville Crossing shopping center (13860 Braddock Road) is the first in Virginia and the second in the D.C. region, following an opening in Rockville, Maryland, in 2024.
