Workhouse Arts Center to host annual beer and arts festival next month in Lorton

Pints and palettes will collide next month at the Workhouse Arts Center’s annual BrewWorks beer and arts festival in Lorton.

On Saturday, May 18, from noon to 5 p.m., attendees can enjoy craft beer tastings and watch artists compete in fast-paced painting and drawing competitions, according to a press release.

Roughly a dozen local breweries plan to participate in the festival, including Bunnyman Brewing, which is slated to open its second brewery location at the Lorton campus this summer. Other notable participants are Ono Brewing Company, Fair Winds Brewing Company, and Heritage Brewing Company. Various local food truck vendors will also be on-site to satisfy diverse palates.

Eight artists from the DMV area plan to compete in quick-fire rounds of painting and drawing. The art battle will unfold over three rounds, per the release.

Round 1 – 12:30 – 1:15 pm
Round 2 – 1:35 – 2:20 pm
Final Round – 2:40 – 3:35 pm

Festival attendees can also bid on the artwork during a silent auction from 3:45 – 4:50 p.m. following the battle.

General admission for attendees over 21 is $50, while tickets for non-alcoholic participants are $10.

Taim Mediterranean Kitchen in Reston permanently shutters four months after opening

Taim Mediterranean Kitchen in Reston has permanently closed just four months after its opening.

The New York-based chain, known for its falafel, initially held a grand opening at 11692 Plaza America Drive in Reston on Dec. 6. However, the restaurant suddenly closed this month without warning.

The closure of Taim Mediterranean Kitchen in Reston was not announced on the company’s social media accounts, but Google has marked it as “permanently closed.” When FFXnow contacted its sister restaurant in D.C., a manager confirmed that the closure is permanent.

The owner did not respond to a request for more information by press time.

Taim has 13 eateries along the eastern seaboard, nearly all of which are in New York. There is one location in D.C., and another was planned for Vienna, although there have been no updates on its opening.

None of the company’s other locations appear to have closed, according to Google.

Cirque Du Soleil set to perform at Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax next month

Cirque Du Soleil is coming back to Fairfax next month.

The theatrical aerobatic spectacle is performing eight shows at George Mason University’s Eagle Bank Arena from May 17-25.

This year’s production, Corteo, which translates to “procession” in Italian, centers on a clown who imagines his own funeral as a carnival-like spectacle, with “caring angels” watching over quietly, according to a press release.

Below is the performance schedule.

  • Friday, May, 17 at 7 p.m.
  •  Saturday, May 18 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 25 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Ticket prices range from $60 to $170.

Corteo, the most enchanting arena production from Cirque du Soleil is back in North America and heading to Fairfax, Virginia set to charm audiences for the very first time. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show combines the actor’s passion with the acrobat’s grace and power to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy, and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic, and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena. It divides the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show but also a performer’s eye view of the audience. An atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand-painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo.

Daytime eatery First Watch set to open fifth location in Fair Lakes this summer

The day-time dining spot First Watch is set to open its new Fair Lakes location this summer.

The fast-casual Florida-based chain restaurant, known for its unique breakfast, lunch and brunch-only concept, expects to open the new location in late June 2024 at 12249 Fair Lakes Promenade Drive, according to the restaurant’s spokesperson Hunter Carpenter.

Spanning 7,000-square-foot space, the restaurant will be one of its largest in Virginia. It follows a series of other openings across Fairfax over the last few years, including one last month in Franconia. A sixth location is also scheduled to open at Idylwood Plaza in Leesburg this Fall.

First Watch operates more than 520 restaurants in 29 states, nine of which are located in Virginia.

The menu offers an “elevated approach” to traditional breakfast, brunch, and lunch, including favorites like avocado toast, lemon ricotta pancakes, and million-dollar bacon.

When FFXnow went by the site to take peak at its progress, painters had just started putting a fresh coat on the front entrance.

“While the restaurant is still under construction, it will carry queues of what we call ‘urban farm’ — bringing the rustic feel of a farmhouse with the modern elements of an urban loft,” Carpenter said in an email.

Similar to its sister restaurants, the Fair Lakes location will operate seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is expected to employ approximately 30 people.

Carpenter emphasized their “No Night Shifts Ever” policy, aimed at promoting work-life balance for their team members.

Lake Anne Plaza summer concert set to return this summer

The Lake Anne Plaza summer concert series is making a comeback after a five-year break.

Beginning on Wednesday, June 12, the community will host weekly music events every Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. in the plaza until Aug. 12, per a press release. Before 2019, the concert series, known as “Sunset Concerts at Lake Anne Plaza,” had been held consistently for 20 years.

“We are delighted to bring a high-quality variety of musical styles to Lake Anne again,” Reston Community Center (RCC) Board Chair Beverly Cosham said in the release. “Lake Anne Plaza is where RCC’s summer concert series began. As we’ve branched out to some of Reston’s newest neighborhoods, it’s sweet to be back where we started in 2024.”

RCC has agreed to support Reston nonprofit events at Lake Anne Plaza by becoming an annual Community Sponsor.

This sponsorship will allow the the Lake Anne of Reston Condominium Association (LARCA) to waive use fees for Reston nonprofits hosting events on the plaza. RCC will also have its concert series fees waived. Two sponsorships will be implemented this year: one for $12,000 covering plaza events in May and June, and another for $50,000 starting July 1, covering events until June 30, 2025.

“We are happy to host RCC-funded Reston area organized events on our property for the enjoyment of the greater Reston community, while at the same time ensuring the maintenance, cleaning, and insuring costs are not borne by the association,” President of LARCA George Hadjikyriakou said in the release. “We look forward to the continued partnership as it benefits everyone.”

The first event is scheduled for June 12, featuring a performance by the Mystic Warriors.
